A superb Coromandel Decanter box with retailers plaque "Lawson & Son, Old Steine, Brighton" The interior of this Coromandel Decanter box has three hobnail crystal decanters housed in blue velvet lined interior, with a beautiful gilded & engraved serving tray, eight spirit glasses and the bottom has a brass swing handle and compartmentalised cigar drawer. The top of the box has an inscription which reads: Presented to H.J.Davis Esq, For valuable services rendered as Hons, Sec to the Beaconsfield Habitation, Primrose League No 212 Brighton 1890 Provenance The box contains various newspaper clippings which report on Mr Davis himself and the presentation of the box. Mr Davis was elected Secretary of the Beaconsfield Habitation of the Primrose League in 1887. In his time as Secretary he worked hard to recruit new members of the Habitation, the numbers of w hich increased from 152 at the time of his election, to 849 in 1890. The Primrose League was formed in 1883 by admirers of Benjamin Disraeli with the aim of promoting Conservative Party principles. Named after Disraeli's favourite flower, the organisation was founded by the important political figures of Lord Randolph Churchill, father of Sir Winston, and Sir Henry Drummond Wolff. As a result of its creation, the Conservative Party entered a new political era in the mid-1880s, with men, women and, later, children, flocking to join the Primrose League. By the early 1900s it was said to have one and a half million members. Badges played an important role in spreading its message. The primrose was especially appealing to women, as it made the badges look like a piece of jewellery. It also made a clear political statement. A writer in The Lady's Realm of 1902 claimed that 'the sight of the Primrose League badge has in some cases done as much to win recruits as the ablest of addresses and most eloquent of appeals'.
