By Hunt and Roskell From our Vanity Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Coromandel Silver Gilt Vanity Box by Hunt and Roskell. The Vanity Box of rectangular shape with brass edging veneered in exotic Coromandel with a vacant initial plaque. The front and lid of the box feature brass stringing framing the outer perimeter with a barrel shaped escutcheon to the front. The exterior is finished with twin brass handles, one to each side with shaped accents and ball inlays. The interior of the Vanity Box is lined in royal blue velvet with a ruched inner lid containing a rear compartment holding a free standing mirror and storage for letters. The Vanity Box houses fourteen cut glass jars with engine turned sliver gilt Sterling Silver lids with vacant initial plaques to the centre of each jar. The Silver is hallmarked London, Sterling Silver by Charles Rawlings & William Summers and is dated 1846. To the centre of the top tray there is a rectangular removable tool pad containing various vanity tools. The top tray is removable via the two metal loop tabs to each side, located beneath the tray is a second tray with multiple partitions for jewellery, rings and or cufflinks.The second jewellery tray can be removed to access a larger storage area in the base. The rear of the Vanity Box is partitioned and contains five larger glass jars and an extremely rare silver gilt cup with a lined cushion for the glass jar which sits inside. The interior of the box is finished with a Bramah lock signed on the lock plate J.Bramah, 124 Piccadilly. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors.
