About the Item

16-17th century hand-carved sandstone head of a Lohan. Skillful execution, highlighting the face with vigorous modeling and harmoniously expression. In original and untouched condition. Mounted on later granite plinth. China or Burma, 1600-1700th century. In Theravada Buddhism, the Arhat, translated into Chinese as Lohan, is one who has followed the Eightfold Path and has achieved deliverance of this earthly existence. They are known for their great wisdom, courage and supernatural.
