Antique Austrian Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp Austrian, Early 20th Century Height 25cm, width 16cm, depth 12cm Depicting a charming school scene, this Orientalist lamp wrought in the traditional Viennese manner from cold-painted bronze is a superb example of early 20th century design. The main body of this sculptural lamp is cast in the shape of a traditional Orientalist building covered with various textiles such as rugs, providing protection from the sun and rain. On a raised plinth sits a teacher dressed in bright marigold clothing tied together with a red belt. His head is beautifully adorned with a polychrome head...

Large Viennese cold-painted bronze lamp of a mandolin player by Bergman Austrian, c. 1910 Height 39cm, width 15cm, depth 15cm Crafted around 1910 by Franz Xaver Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), this Orientalist sculptural lamp depicts a young woman playing a mandolin and singing. She is sitting on a green cushioned seat while beneath her feet is a polychrome patterned rug draped on two steps. Dressed in typical Orientalist clothing, her beautifully executed facial expression suggests she is in a joyful mood. Above the main figure is a domed canopy. Its construction includes a pierced window draped by a striped red and gold curtain. A gold shield and a flag also hang on the construction. The domed cover is superbly decorated with trefoil windows filled with coloured glass and is surmounted by a crescent moon which is an important symbol of Islam. A similar motif can also be observed on the flagpole. The lamp is stamped with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, ‘GESCH’ as well as ‘3’. The cold-painting technique has been superbly used to highlight even the smallest details of the scene, such as the patterns on the rug or the texture of the seat. Austrian Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp of a shoe cobbler Austrian, Early 20th Century Height 23cm, width 21cm, depth 16cm The story presented by the makers of this sculptural lamp is set at a shoe cobbler’s workshop. Made in the traditional Viennese manner of cold-painted bronze, the piece is an outstanding example of high quality Orientalist design. Three shoe cobblers are depicted working together in a traditional Orientalist building, one covered by textiles to protect them from the elements. The wall is decorated with a large pair of scissors, a tool often used by shoe cobblers. In the foreground is a male figure reaching towards a wooden bench on which shoes needing repair are displayed. Behind him, sitting on a bamboo-supported table sit two other male figures. The first one is caught mid-speaking, in a pose suggesting he is excited. On his legs is a piece of textile. The man next to him is seen holding threads in both hands, repairing a vibrant red shoe. All figures are dressed in loosely fit clothing...
