Oak Panel Back Settle

About the Item

Four shaped panels comprise the back of this antique settle dating to the era of George III. The upholstered cushion is now foam filled, but would have originally been stuffed with horsehair and straw. Seen throughout England since the 1600s, the settle was a staple for keeping the drafts away and sitting in relative comfort—a step up from the simple benches it replaced.
