Rare Child's Windsor Armchair. Made predominantly of yew wood and ash with a figured elm seat. Simple turned legs over "Crinoline" shaped stretchers. Beautiful color and a deep patina. Made in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. A rare and exceptionally well-preserved child's Windsor armchair, crafted in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. This charming and finely scaled example exemplifies early 19th-century English vernacular design, made predominantly of richly figured yew wood and ash, with a beautifully grained elmwood seat carved from a single plank. The hooped back is flanked by hand-turned spindles, flowing gracefully into shaped arms supported by balustar-turned arm supports. The seat is deeply sculpted and retains a warm, timeworn patina, showcasing the natural beauty of the elm. Mid century Chinese Chippendale / Chinoiserie / Brighton Pavilion style chairs made of rattan and bamboo featuring reticulated geometric fretwork design and caned seat. George IV, as Prince of Wales, first began to lodge in Brighton from the 1780s. At first, he had a modest house known as the Marine Villa, designed by Henry Holland. By the time he became the Prince Regent in 1811, following the decision that his father King George III was no longer fit to rule, he had plans for a much bigger, more extravagant palace. George was an entertainer and lived an extremely extravagant lifestyle. He needed a bombastic demonstration of his taste, wealth and power, in addition to being large enough to host all of the people and events he had planned. As such, in 1815 he commissioned his favourite architect, John Nash (responsible for much of the design of Regency London), to create his vision. A beautifully decorated and handmade “Shepherds Crooks” armchair from England, mid 19th century. The Cartouche-shaped back veneered in figured burr walnut, the silk needlework upholstery (from a later period) in a flower design and silk on the armrest give this chair a very rich look. The firm chair is in good condition, only the upholstery from the seat has on the side a few cracks.
