Dated 1750 by two of the carvings on the frontage, this lovely hand-carved oak chest hails from Spain. The front façade is adorned with numerous carvings, including the two wide niches in the center that read “17N” and “50A”. These carved dates are set in between three rosettes, each beneath an arch that is comprised of repeating S-scrolls. More flowers can be seen near the bottom of the main body, with numerous rosettes emanating from an undulating vine. Below the sprawling vine is a protruding molding, mirroring the top, that overhangs a repeating motif of carved niches. The lid stays open with the aid of a metal hook, revealing red paper lining with mismatched motifs throughout the interior. On the side is a four-inch-tall compartment that would have once been used to keep valuable items from settling to the bottom of the chest. This magnificent leather over wood trunk traveling trunk has three different sizes of nail heads comprising an arabesque design on the curved top and front panel. Beautiful open worked, wrap around, brass straps are on the front and sides with a stunning lock that has a crown over another motif and two rings hanging from it. Beneath this is a four sided, full field motif within another scrolling motif. Hand wrought iron handles are on the sides of this trunk. The sides and back of the trunk have a cross hatched design on the leather. On the curved top in the center scroll, is the capital letter M with 17 and 29 surrounding it. There are also letters of ADLP centered beneath this and above a wonderful linear serpentine motif in nail heads surrounding the arabesque motif.
