Games tables were highly fashionable at Versailles and the queen organised gambling evenings several times a week losing huge amounts of money. She had to ask for the king’s financial support which he usually offered happily, despite the royal ban on gaming! This fine quality regency period drum table has eight Camphor lined drawers in the frieze, two of which have Chinese script on the underside saying NO 1 and No 7. Each drawer is adorned with two brass knobs. The body of the table is supported on a central columnar stem with four splayed and line inlaid legs.
