Antique Chromolithograph Monstrance Reiche Kapelle Munich Sacred Object, 1874
This impressive large antique chromolithograph was published in Munich in 1874 by F. X. Zettler and issued as part of the renowned portfolio Ausgewählte Kunstwerke aus dem Schatze der Reichen Capelle in der königlichen Residenz zu München. The series documented the extraordinary ecclesiastical treasures preserved within the Reiche Kapelle (Rich Chapel) of the Munich Residenz during the reign of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, created to preserve and share the artistic and spiritual heritage of the Bavarian royal court.
The print depicts an elaborate monstrance or devotional display object, richly adorned with gemstones, enamel decoration, and intricate goldsmith work. At its center appears a finely rendered devotional scene framed within an ornate oval surround, emphasizing both sacred symbolism and royal craftsmanship. The elegant vertical composition highlights the architectural structure of the object, from its elaborate base through the slender stem to the richly decorated upper section, reflecting the ceremonial importance of such liturgical works within court worship.
Executed using advanced chromolithographic techniques, the print demonstrates the exceptional quality for which F. X. Zettler’s Munich workshop became internationally known. Chromolithography allowed the faithful reproduction of metallic surfaces, jewel-like colours, and minute ornamental details, creating an image that closely evokes the brilliance and material richness of the original object. Produced during a nineteenth-century revival of medieval and Renaissance sacred art, the publication combined scholarly documentation with strong decorative appeal.
Today, prints from this portfolio are valued both as historical records of royal ecclesiastical collections and as refined decorative works suited to curated interiors. The tall vertical format and luminous colour palette make this example particularly effective as a focal piece, whether displayed individually or grouped with other plates from the series.
The chromolithograph is offered unframed, allowing flexibility for custom framing tailored to individual interiors or gallery presentation.
Condition: Good antique condition overall with age-related toning and scattered foxing mainly visible in the margins. The horizontal fold line is visible across the sheet, consistent with original portfolio storage. The image area remains clear and vibrant.
Framing suggestions: A dark walnut, ebonized, or subtle gilt frame combined with a generous ivory or museum-white mat enhances the jewel-like colours and reinforces the vertical elegance of the composition. Deep matting provides a refined museum presentation.
