Unique and highly collectible antique Gothic wall cabinet with working lock and key.
This handcrafted and rare Gothic Revival wall cabinet from the late 1800s or early 1900s is another one of our magnificent recent finds. The uniqueness of the design, the quality of the workmanship, the many Gothic details, the patina and its excellent condition makes this another perfect purchase for collectors of this ancient and highly decorative style. Even more so when you have a special interest in collecting reliquary items, because this cabinet was made purely for that purpose. This is pretty clear to see by the small size of the square cabinet itself, but even more so by the hand sawn brass text at the bottom 'RELIQUIAE SANCTORUM' which means Relics of Saints. The former owner / collector told us that this piece originated from a convent in the southeast of the Netherlands, but he could no longer remember the name. If it was made in the Netherlands or in another European country, is something we don't know. What we do know is that this cabinet is laced with Christian and Gothic decorations, such as the descending bird: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. The bird coming down from the sky in the door of this cabinet is doing so between a pair of Gothic church like windows (with tilted quatrefoil symbols in the top). The larger, winged angels on either side of the cabinet as well as the cross in the top center too are all handsawn out of thick brass. Finally, the hand sawn PAX sign stands...
