The large scale of this stunning bracelet indicates that it was created for a very wealthy individual, likely to commemorate a Grand Tour voyage. The exquisitely engraved carnelian intaglio depicts a complex scene with classical Roman architectural buildings, possibly the Piazza del Popolo in Rome, surrounded by angels with Christ amidst clouds watching over the Eternal City and being crowned by angels. The impressive size of the intaglio and superb execution point to this piece being created in Rome by a jeweler possibly associated with the Vatican Workshops. Rome was the pinnacle of attraction of the Grand Tour- the seat of papal splendour, capital of the ancient world and a treasure trove of art. Numerous fine jewelers worked tirelessly to create beautiful mementos to commemorate the Grand Tour travels of the wealthy. Expertly crafted in rich 18ct gold with slight rosey tones, it has a smooth polished finish to the reverse.
The face of the bangle is an elaborate combination of scrollwork and floral detailing, all set in sterling silver to highlight the beautiful old rose cut diamonds.
The diamonds adorn the entire front of the bangle and the old rose cuts catch the light beautifully.
Rose cut diamonds were painstakingly hand cut by master tradesmen with low light such as candlelight providing the pretty and charming twinkle that has become synonymous with the cut.
The bangle opens with a small push catch and has a gold safety chain attached.
The diamonds totalling Approx 2ct weight in total, estimated in the setting, the larger diamonds approximately 5x6 mm.
It is unmarked, C1870s, Victorian era, tests as 18ct gold and silver.
