c.1900 Jugendstil Rolled Gold Antique Articulated Pendant and Chain
Located in Skelmersdale, GB
This stylish necklace was probably created in Austria or Germany in c.1900. Condition Report: Excellent The Details... This necklace is constructed from rolled gold - it is stamped 'ROLLED GOLD SP' on the chain. It features a delicate cable chain and a pendant. The pendant has a typically linear and bold Jugendstil design. It is articulated, so that it moves with the wearer and is detailed with a bezel set, faceted, red glass stone and two bezel set, open back mounted, triangular cut, faceted purple glass stones. The necklace fastens with a bolt ring. The chain measures 42cm and the pendant measures 6.5cm x 2cm. A Short History... The term Jugendstil, meaning "Young Style," was derived from the magazine Die Jugend and describes an art and design movement which took place in Germany and Austria from c.1896 through to c.1915. Taking place at the same time as the Art Nouveau movement, which was inspired by the natural world, Jugendstil was also heavily influenced by organic shapes but contrasted them with geometric forms resulting in very stylised designs. Important Jugendstil jewellery designers were Carl Herman, Meyle and Mayer...

SWISS 2000-315" The Edwardian era Like the Georgian and Victorian eras before it, derives its name from the reign of the English King, Edward VII (1901-1910). Edwardian jewelry is known for representing femininity while incorporating a lot of the color white. Think diamonds, pearls and white metals like platinum and white gold. Diamonds often had an Old Mine or European cut and sapphires were a popular choice for a pop of color. They tended to be made from platinum and diamonds – the more, the merrier – and used fashionable, intricate techniques such as filigree and millegrain. Edwardian rings are works of art and best worn alone or alongside a simple wedding band. Mill graining, a new decorative technique made possible by the use of platinum, is featured often on Edwardian jewelry. Its border of delicate balls and ridges surrounding a gemstone or on the knife sharp edges of a design served to give jewelry a softer, lighter look. Guilloché This technique is used in fine jewelry to enhance the appearance of brooches, rings and pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue. Collateral: Tiffany & Co. clock necklace...

1920s Egyptian Revival Silver Gilt and Enamel Vintage Charms Necklace
Located in Skelmersdale, GB
This beautiful necklace is emblematic of the evocative 1920s Egyptian Revival aesthetic and was made in France. Condition Report: Very Good - A slight kink in the chain and a tiny bend at the base of one of the charms. This is consistent with age and use and does not detract from the appeal of the piece. The Details... Although un-hallmarked, this necklace is most likely constructed from silver gilt. It features a delicate herringbone chain. Suspended from the chain is a selection of Egyptian inspired charms. There are Ankhs, Lotus flowers and Hamsa hand symbols. There are also three postage stamp charms detailed with skiff boats on the Nile and the goddess, Hathor. The necklace fastens with a bolt ring and measures 38cm in length. A Short History... In 1922, Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun and, thereby, ignited a Western fascination with Ancient Egypt which permeated the Arts. Jewellery designers created heavily stylised profiles of people and hieroglyphs taken from tomb walls, as can be seen in this necklace. Reviving Egyptian...

Antique and Vintage Necklaces for Sale: Shop Van Cleef Necklaces, Pearl Necklaces and Tiffany Necklaces on 1stDibs

We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners. Today, Van Cleef necklaces, Tiffany necklaces and Cartier necklaces are some of the most popularly searched designer necklaces on 1stDibs.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage David Webb necklaces — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt

On 1stDibs, browse top designers like Dior, Chanel and Bulgari, or shop by your favorite style, from eye-catching choker necklaces to understated links to pearl necklaces and more.
