He took up drawing in 1939 and relocated to Buenos Aires, where he worked as a printing apprentice in the industrial Barracas section of the Argentine capital. Returning to Montevideo in the late 1940s, he developed an interest in Afro-Uruguayan culture. Settling in Montevideo's primarily black neighborhood of "Mediomundo" ("Half-World"), he studied the Candombé and Comparsa dances characteristic to the culture. He composed numerous musical pieces in the two genres and conducted an orchestra. His group's congas and bongos were decorated with their leader's own thematic drawings, as well. His interest in the culture later led him to Brazil, home to the western hemisphere's largest population of African descent. Páez Vilaró was invited to exhibit some of this work by the Director of the Modern Art Museum of Paris, Jean Cassou, in 1956. He traveled to Dakar, Senegal, later that year – his first visit to Africa. He was one of the "Grupo de los 8", a movement of Uruguayan art...

Both pieces are stamped with the edition numbers. Liuba Wolf She born as Liuba Boyadjieva in Sofia Bulgaria in 1923. She was raised in a privileged, cultivated milieu by a writer mother and industrialist father who (he also played the violin) instilled in her a taste for music. The artist received a humanistic education, studying Greek and Latin and mastering the piano. When her family moved to Geneva, she attended art school and developed a special interest in sculpture. Later, she studied in Zurich under Germaine Richier (1904-1958), a renowned artist of the Paris School. This contact with Germaine Richier had a strong impact on Liuba Boyadjieva’s education as a modern sculpture and left a deep imprint on her understanding of sculpture. In those years, in Zurich, she was also in contact with a group of important artists, like, among others, Marino Marini and Arthur Honnegger. At the end of the war, when Richier reopened her atelier in Paris, Liuba moved to the French capital and continued her studies with her teacher until 1949. Her social circle in France included Zadkine, Viera da Silva, Alberto Magnelli, among others. She traveled often throughout Europe and visited the most important museums. Liuba Boyadjieva came to Brazil, married the industrialist and collector Ernesto Wolf in 1958, and lived between São Paulo and Paris, keeping studios in both cities. She became a naturalized Brazilian citizen. She developed a personal way of working her sculptures and achieved full artistic maturity. In the 1960s and 1970s, Liuba Wolf exhibited her work in several cities around the world and achieved international recognition. In 2001, on the occasion of her exhibition at Achim Moeller Fine Art. Rizzoli (New York) published a book celebrating Wolf’s art and featuring Sam Hunter’s essay “Liuba: At the Edge of Abstraction.” Among the central features of Liuba Wolf’s work are her expressive power, the surface’s play between the smooth and the textured, and rusticity. Verticality is another key characteristic, as well as the gesturalism of the forms. Figurative early on in her career, Wolf’s works became abstracted starting in the 1950s, but there always remained an archaic memory that referred back to primitive archetypes. Some critics, like Sam Hunter, see in those shapes a reference to pre-Columbian realities. Another highlight is a degree of surrealism in Wolf’s abstraction, yet critics mostly underscore the fact that she situated her sculptures at the border between abstraction and figuration, as well as the force of imagination in the conception of the works. On more than one occasion Liuba Wolf said that her forms are born from the subconscious. For her, they are “bugs”, animals, but they can also be plants or roots. They could be totems, in a symbiosis between the animal and the plant worlds, according to another observer, artist Emmanoel Araújo. Liuba Wolf stated once in an interview that her work “finds inspiration in natural shapes.” The exhibition at the Lasar Segall...

Dalhoff's workshops. He also attended the Royal Danish Academy of Arts where he was influenced by Gustav Friedrich Hersch. In 1836, he went on a long journey abroad, working in some of the leading goldsmiths in Germany and Paris. He established his own goldsmith in Gothersgade, Copenhagen when he returned to Denmark in 1841. After five years at Hans Hansen Jensen sent his CV to A. Michelsen in Copenhagen, where he worked for the next forty years until his retirement in 1985. After just four years he became the foreman for the goldsmith workshop, he simultaneously studied and became a qualified gemologist and diamond expert. At Michelsen Eigil Jensen fulfilled many different design assignments, including jewelry, Christmas spoons, and hollowware. Nanna Ditzel is working with experimental and industrial design furniture, textiles, silver, faience and glass. Has experimented with the use of split-level living for indoors and outdoors. The ideas have been carried through in playgrounds, children libraries and showrooms. Freelance designer, she has a design office and showrooms in London. Nanna Ditzel started independent design office in 1946 together with Jorgen Ditzel. The co-operation lasted until the death of Jorge Ditzel in 1961. Nanna Ditzel created many designs for Georg Jensen, mostly jewelry although she also created some hollowware. The relationship between the couple and the Silversmith began when Nanna decided to start designing jewelry as something she could do at home while her children slept. Soon after, a jewelry competition sponsored by A. Michelsen arose, and her designs had won first prize. Later on, in 1954, Finn Juhl, who was developing the 50th anniversary exhibition, passed the design work off for the exhibition to the Ditzels. Five pieces of jewelry were created for this exhibit, which were very well received. Further jewelry designs were created, and many of these pieces would go on to win various awards and prizes. In 1968, Nanna Ditzel remarried to Kurt Heide and relocated to London where they continued to work in the realm of design, establishing their own company Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd. In 1986, her second husband passed away, and she moved back to Denmark, continuing her work. In recent years, Ditzel has focused mainly on furniture design, such as the Trinidad chair in 1993, however this design has also led to the further refinement for her jewelry pieces such as the bracelet #389 in 1994. Ditzel has won many major awards during her long career and has had her work exhibited all over the world. She received the silver and gold medals at the Milan Tirennale (1954 and 1960), the Lunning Prize (with Jorgen Ditzel in 1954) and a gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in 1990, and the Thorvald Bindesboll Medal in 1999. She has also taken on the title of Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, Honorable Royal Designer ( 1996). From Georg Jensen Hollowware...
