These are a very good Large pair of Chinese foo or lion dogs on plinth's, sometimes called temple lions made of metal and hand gilded with fine detail, all in the Ming style but dating to the early 20th century, Circa 1920s period.
These are an unusually large pair of Chinese Export Foo Dogs, nearly 12 inches tall, with an unpacked weight of over 2Kg each.
These pair of Foo Dogs are modelled in the Ming style, sat on rectangular plinths with a brocade ball under one raised foot. These pieces are very well detailed, then hand gilded. The plinth's have detailed motifs moulded into the central panels with border detail along their upper and lower edges, with black felt to their bases.

These are a very good PAIR of antique Chinese foo or lion dog sculptures, sometimes called temple lions, made of a brass-bronze metal alloy, with excellent detail, dating to the early 19th century, Qing period or possibly earlier back to the 18th century.
They are a male and female pair, the male with the slightly larger head. These pieces are very well cast with good detail and wear, showing a very good depth of colour. Both dogs have a small hole on the top of the head for incense to be placed.
Each piece weighs about 700gm unpacked

With a combined experience of almost 30 years in the antiques trade, we were thrilled to once again find beautifully hand-crafted and decorative antiques that we had never seen before. From the density and the weight we can see and feel that these highly decorative horse sculptures are made of a tropical hardwood. Like, for example, with antique mirror frames or church sculptures these horses too were first covered with a mixture of chalk and glue so that the paint would hold longer. And, as so often is the case with antiques, the colors that were used for painting these horses are so much more beautiful than anything you find in this day and age that they truly are an absolute joy to look at. From the colors, the wear, the materials and the techniques that were used to create these horses we can see that these are 19th century antiques. However and unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be able to tell you from which country these highly decorative and sizeable works of art originate. We just can't find matching style horse sculptures anywhere on the worldwide web. They could be Chinese or Nepalese, but they could also be Persian or Arabian. We just have not been able to find out. What we do know is that they are definitely antique, they are in beautiful condition (with some wear, consistent with their age), they are highly decorative, probably unique and they have a look and feel that will instantly change the atmosphere of the room they are in.
Mind you, our sharp price for this wonderful pair of horse sculptures...

From our Japanese collection, we are delighted to offer this Japanese Satsuma Iris Vase Painted by Ryuzan. The Japanese Satsuma vase of tall tapered form features a circular rolled foot rim, slightly pinched base with a tapered body and slightly bulbous opening. The vase is decorated with a central continuous band of bright iris flowers with various shades of green to the stems and beautiful violet petals. The central band is framed by greek key borders and honeycomb geometric patterns to the top and bottom. The vase is signed to the base Ryuzan 龍山 and dates to the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and the late 19th century circa 1895.
Satsuma ware is a type of earthenware pottery originating from the Satsuma province in Southern Kyushu, Japan’s third largest island.
Meiji Period was an era of Japanese history that spanned from 1868 to 1912. It was the first half of the Empire of Japan, when the Japanese people began to build a paradigm of a modern, industrialised nation state and emergent great power, influenced by Western countries and aesthetics. As a result of radically different ideas, the changes to Japan were profound and it affected the social structure, politics, economy, military, and foreign relations across the board. The period corresponded to the reign of Emperor Meiji and was preceded by the Keio era and was succeeded by the Taisho era.
Cultural Art during the Meiji Period was of particular interest to the government and they overhauled the art export market which in turn promoted Japanese arts via various world’s fairs, beginning in Vienna at the world fair in 1873. The government heavily funded the fairs and took an active role organising how Japan’s culture was presented to the world including creating a semi-public company named Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha (First Industrial Manufacturing Company). The Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha was used to promote and commercialise exports of Japanese art and established the Hakurankai Jimukyoku (Exhibition Bureau) to maintain quality standards. For the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, the Japanese government created a Centennial Office and sent a special envoy to secure space for the 30,000 items that would be displayed. The Imperial Household also took an active interest in arts and crafts, commissioning works by select artists to be given as gifts for foreign dignitaries further emphasising the high quality and importance of Japanese art. Just before the end of the 19th century in 1890, the Teishitsu Gigeiin (Artist to the Imperial Household) system was created to recognise distinguished artists. These artists were selected for their exceptionally high quality wares and talent in their own industry. This is a very good Chinese Export, (Canton) large porcelain plate or dish, all hand painted with a light green celadon glaze, which we date to the early 19th century, circa 1820, of the Qing dynasty.
A feature of this plate is its size, having a large dinner plate diameter of nearly 10 inches, as the majority of plates of this type have a much smaller diameter .
The plate has a light green, Celadon ground glaze with beautifully hand painted decoration, in over-glaze poly-chrome enamels of the Famille-Rose palette, featuring a bird, butterflies, fruits and flowers.
The rim is hand painted in a café-au-lait light brown finish.
There is an under-glaze, cobalt blue square seal mark, hand painted to the base.
