This painting is in excellent condition and has only been shown in a gallery setting. Torres Aleu was born in Cadiz, Spain and has been painting from a very young age. In 1952 his talent was recognized by family members and he began his formal training in art. During his education and training, he studied under the Spanish professor, Mr. Francisco Prieto, a Gold National Medal Landscape Artist. Aleu began painting professionally when he completed his school training in 1960. Since this time he has exhibited in galleries, including Galeries Des Verges, Switzerland, in 1991 and 1992, Galerie Castegliani, Roma, Italy, in 1993, Galerie Soria, Chateauroux, France, in 1995, and Galerie Hispaluz, Concepcion, Chile in 1996 and 1997. Awards received by Aleu include Premio Provincial De Cadiz, Cadiz, in 1957, Premio Nacional De San Fernando, Cadiz, in 1972 and Premio Caga De Ahorros De Jerez, Cadiz in 1973. The Public library in San Fernando, Cadiz and the County Council Office in Cadiz display Aleu’s work. In October 2015 the ailing Holly Woodlawn (1946-2015) completed the final autograph session of her life. Seated on her hospital bed in her Hollywood assisted living facility (with breaks for cigarettes and pain medication), Woodlawn lipstick kissed each photo of an edition of 47 Jack Mitchell photographs of herself and inscribed each, “Love, Holly Woodlawn” in her own hand. When the project was completed after several hours, she said, “Thank you for taking me away from reality for a while; it felt great to be a star again.” Holly passed away just seven weeks later, on December 6, 2015. This photograph was from a session for After Dark magazine and was selected and signed by Jack Mitchell as one of his favorites. Jack’s artist statement on his work for the magazine: “After Dark was a magazine of entertainment, theater and the arts. It was a popular magazine, with a gay slant, enjoyed by many gay men, and some broad minded women and men. As well as (I learned years later) many closeted male youngsters. The magazine was ahead of its time, as advertisers were reluctant to place ads in an essentially gay magazine at that time. Today they swarm like bees to place their own hot ads in gay publications. I had been photographing on assignment for Dance Magazine well before After Dark was created. Being a friend of William (Bill) Como, the Editor, and being gay, I was called into service, for the life of the publication, to photograph many of the handsome young men and women, who were featured in After Dark.
