Fairyland Lustre Plaque 'Picnic' by River, Wedgwood, circa 1925
By Daisy Makeig-Jones, Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Daisy Makeig Jones’ description relates this to Völuspá, a poem from the Poetic Edda, which is a collection of Old Norse poems. In Völuspá, it is said that the dwarves were created by the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and that they were condemned to live underground. The Light Elves are also mentioned in the poem as being allowed to live in the realm of Alfheim, which is a place of beauty and light. In Norse mythology...

Trophy Plate, Wedgwood, circa 1900
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Trophy plates were a particularly Victorian development at Wedgwood, taking the use of classical ornament to its absolute limit. Over 2,000 individual sprigs were made, applied, and undercut to produce this plate. Only the best decorators made these, beginning with Thomas Lovatt in the late 19th century - this is an example of his work. The central relief depicts Bellerophon with Pegasus. Bellerophon was a noble hero of Corinth, known for his strength and bravery. He was the son of Glaucus and the grandson of Sisyphus, though some myths suggest he was actually the son of Poseidon. Bellerophon was a skilled warrior and sought to accomplish great deeds. Pegasus was a magnificent, winged horse born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa...

'Beach Camp' Modernist Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery, 1984
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
Anne Montgomery has been considered for many years one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett and Lina Bryans, her work is now recognised as an important part of Australian modernism. The breadth and quality of Montgomery's work over a long lifetime has always been appreciated by other artists. As Australian women artists in the mid Century period were relegated to the fringes of the establishment, they freely explored their own vision and developed their own style. Montgomery's work richly deserves the attention it's now receiving. This work shows Montgomery's unique perception and expression of colour in the Australian landscape. Her use of oil on board gives her work a robust structure but the inclusion of ink sketching in the work gives it a delicate texture. Her foliage and grasses tickle, her fabric floats, trees dance - her landscapes are in constant movement. This painting depicts a family camping under canvas amongst the Tea...

'Mango Fool' Signed Deanna Conti Large Wool Textile Wall Hanging 1970s
Located in Melbourne, AU
A wildly colourful 1970s hand woven woollen wall hanging by Australian artist Deanna Conti. Titled 'Mango Fool', it's a good example of Conti's work, which focuses on tropical themes and colours. Working from her Queensland studio since the 1970s, Conti's work is held in many private and public collections. The central shape is ovoid and could represent a setting sun over water. The hanging tangles of wool inside this shape have been carefully woven to reveal deeper background colours. The background hangings in purple can be pulled through and draped as one pleases, or pushed back and allowed to attract the eye into the background of the weaving. We love how this piece is so resonant of the 1970s Australian movement to organic living in Queensland. It so clearly belongs in a mudbrick home in the tropics, with raw timber joists and tiled floors, unglazed windows and resident Geckos, Tree Frogs and Orb-weaving spiders...

Jug and Shell Still Life Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
This small but lovely work is an excellent example of Montgomery's joyfully experimental modernism. It is a sketch in oil on composition board. A table and jug are heavily outlined. The shape of a white seashell is superimposed, with a ghostly idea of it's internal spiral and speckled surface sketched in. The table surface is covered in sgraffito curls while heavy brush strokes build texture in the background. Montgomery's painting vibrates with lively observations of colour and texture. It was purchased from the artist's own studio (the address is penciled on the back) for a single owner collection, then passed down by descent. Anne Montgomery has for many years been one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett...
