Period Lithograph on Tin of SS IMPERATOR
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
This period lithograph of the S.S. IMPERATOR includes its original period frame with plaque. There are a few nicks on the tin but the condition is overall excellent.
SS IMPERATOR was a German ocean liner built for the Hamburg America Line. At the time of her completion in June 1913, she was the largest passenger ship in the world by gross tonnage, surpassing the new White Star liner OLYMPIC.
IMPERATOR was the first of three successively larger Hamburg American liners that included SS Vaterland (later the United States Liner LEVIATHAN) and SS Bismarck (purchased and renamed MAJESTIC for the White Star Line transatlantic passenger service).
IMPERATOR ran a transatlantic route for 14 months, until the outbreak of World War I, after which she remained in port in Hamburg. After the war, she was briefly commissioned into the United States Navy as USS IMPERATOR and employed as a troop transport, returning American troops from Europe. Following her service with the U.S. Navy, IMPERATOR was handed over to Britain's Cunard Line as part of war reparations, due to the loss of the RMS LUSITANIA...

Female Figurative_Blue_Nude_Linocut_Salty Skin & Dusky Sky_Ellen Von Wiegand
By Ellen Von Wiegand
Located in Laguna Beach, CA
Ellen Von Wiegand’s body of work reverberates with a quest for self-assurance and serenity as she uses her own nude body within her stylized prints. In a new series of large scale, limited edition linocuts now on view at JoAnne Artman Gallery’s Laguna Beach location, her portraits feature a distinctive use of line to establish composition, as well as a tool to divide space and color into defined, physical boundaries.

Salty Skin and Dusky Sky (Ed. of 6)
Linocut on Kozuke Paper
66 x 40 in. Image 70.25 x 44.25 in. Framed
As opposed to digital prints, linocuts celebrate the long tradition of handmade editioned art that has been practiced for nearly two millennia. While woodblock printmaking goes back thousands of years, artists like Picasso popularized linocut in the early part of the 20th century due to wider availability of linoleum.
“All parts of my process are done by hand, from the original drawing, to the carving, and final printing. In order to produce a work in multiple colors, separate blocks need to be carved and printed for each hue. As a result, creating a limited edition of colorful prints is quite time consuming and requires a great deal of patience. And while there are multiple prints created from the same plates, each one is truly an original work of art” Von Wiegand explains.
Reminiscent of ancient Corinthian Black...

Barkentine THOMAS P. EMIGH with Photos and Ephemera
By William Edgar
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Reaching under full sail, including a jib-headed "kicker" topsail on the Jigger mast, the white-hulled barkentine THOMAS P. EMIGH is depicted approaching what appears to be the headland near Byron's Bay, Australia. The EMIGH engaged primarily in the Pacific lumber trade and Byron's Bay was one of Australia's foremost timber ports. Byron Point lighthouse, which marks the easternmost point on the Australian continent, is visible on its promontory high in the mist in the far distance. A tug, a steamer and a schooner are shown off the harbor entrance, under the EMIGH's bowsprit.
Launched at Tacoma in 1902, the 1040 ton THOS P. EMIGH was owned and operated by the Charles Nelson Shipping Company of Oakland whose house flag...

Napoleonic Prisoner of War Model of a 2nd Rate Ship of 72 Guns

Considered a pinnacle artform of the ship modeling craft, bone ships made by French and Dutch prisoners captured and held by the British during the Napoleonic Conflict are among the most collectible maritime artifacts to be identified. This beautifully detailed model is of a British Second Rate Warship, so classified due to the number of guns it carried.
Unusually large, this model's length, nearly 30 inches, puts it in the largest class of prisoner of war models...

Sea Service Pistol by Ketland
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
This Revolutionary War period flintlock pistol was made by Thomas Ketland, Sr. a successful firearms maker who was in business under this name from around 1760. He began to export weapons in 1790. The name Ketland continued as W. Ketland under his son and under Ketland and Walker with a later partner, though Thomas Sr. died in 1816.
Signed on the lockplate T. Ketland & Co. with clear Birmingham proof marks which may be a later proofing of this weapon. The gun includes brass details and engraved floral elements and flourishes. There is wear to the gun consistent with use but the marks are clear and it is in good condition. A fine quality early flintlock pistol by a top maker of British guns...

Sailors Woolwork of Two Full Rigged Ships
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
This fine example of the sailor's art features great detail and is in good condition for a woolwork of this age. Most 19th century sailors had some skill with a needle as they were required to keep their own clothing in good repair as well as maintaining cloth items aboard ship. Some sailors used their skills to create ship portraits like these as a tribute and memory of their time at sea. This folk art
medium reveals the subtlety and skill of the sailor's art.
