Christian Liaigre Ebonized Oak "Courier" Dining Table

By Christian Liaigre

Located in Philadelphia, PA

We are pleased to present a Christian Liaigre for Holly Hunt "Courier" Dining Table. This table features an open grain ebonized oak wood that has aged gracefully over time. It is not pitch black, but a dark espresso brown table with black undertones. Very good overall condition with minor imperfections. This table was originally designed by Liaigre for his own house in Ile de Re, France, showcasing his impeccable taste and attention to detail. This long dining table is a stunning piece that blends minimalist design with rustic farmhouse charm. The rectangular top of the table features beveled sides, adding an elegant touch to the overall design. The trestle-style base, with its thick x-form legs, provides sturdy support and creates a striking visual statement. The excellent joinery and craftsmanship can be seen throughout. Ships from Philadelphia. We have the largest collection in the US of previously-owned Liaigre pieces. While this example does not retain the makers stamp, it is unmistakably an authentic Courier table...

Large Early 20th C. Abercrombie & Fitch Copper Equestrian / Fishing Tackle Box
Large Early 20th C. Abercrombie & Fitch Copper Equestrian / Fishing Tackle Box

Large Early 20th C. Abercrombie & Fitch Copper Equestrian / Fishing Tackle Box

By Abercrombie & Fitch

Located in Red Lion, PA

Large Early 20th Century Abercrombie & Fitch Solid Copper Equestrian / Fishing Tackle Box, A True Unicorn of American Sporting History There are rare objects. And then there are objects so scarce they feel nearly extinct. This sizable early 20th century solid copper tackle or equestrian box by Abercrombie & Fitch belongs in the latter category. Measuring an impressive 7.25 x 19.13 x 5.38 inches, this is not a modest accessory, it is a commanding, heirloom-grade sporting chest fashioned entirely from solid copper and now cloaked in the most extraordinary naturally developed patina one could hope to encounter. Deep auburns, warm chocolate browns, and subtle verdigris undertones create a surface that only a century of honest aging can produce. It is sculptural. Architectural. Almost reverent. In extensive research, no other surviving example of a copper latching box of this scale by Abercrombie & Fitch has surfaced. It is, quite simply, a unicorn. Founded in 1892, Abercrombie & Fitch was not originally a fashion retailer, it was the premier American outfitter for serious outdoorsmen, explorers, equestrians, anglers, big-game hunters, and presidents. By the early 20th century, the Abercrombie flagship store in Manhattan had become a pilgrimage site for those preparing for safari in Africa, trout fishing in the Adirondacks, or an expedition to the Arctic. Their catalogues were encyclopedic works of aspiration and utility, supplying everything from fly rods and saddlery to tents, custom firearms, and scientifically designed luggage. Abercrombie & Fitch supplied some of the most recognizable names in American history, including: Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, and Amelia Earhart Their goods were engineered not merely for leisure, but for endurance, precision, and legacy. In a 1910 catalog, Abercrombie advertised a smaller copper tackle box with a tinned interior, confirming their use of copper for specialty sporting containers. This larger example likely dates slightly later in the early 20th century and appears to be entirely solid copper with zinc solder construction, suggesting commission by a specialist metalsmith rather than mass production. Inside the lid, the classic early 20th-century Abercrombie & Fitch paper label remains intact—an extraordinarily rare survival in itself. Beneath it lies a second commission label indicating that this box was commissioned by Abercrombie, sold by Abercrombie, but manufactured by a specialist copper maker To the left of the Abercrombie logo is a “B,” and to the right “Co”, yet the exact maker remains unidentified. This was typical of the era: premier retailers frequently partnered with elite specialty manufacturers, particularly in materials such as copper, leather, canvas, and firearms. Just as Abercrombie worked with makers like Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Parker Brothers, and L.L.Bean, so too would they have commissioned bespoke storage from a workshop specializing in heavy-gauge copper. Copper offered distinct advantages for fishing and equestrian gear. It is naturally corrosion-resistant, durable in damp climates, structurally strong yet repairable, and has distinguished aesthetic appeal This box was built to survive generations. The exterior features two robust copper latches, a central locking clasp (no longer retaining its key, does not lock, but latches securely), an inset copper handle that moves smoothly and confidently, and two sturdy rear hinges that operate freely and remain structurally sound The lid opens to reveal four evenly divided interior compartments, ideal for fly fishing tackle, shooting accessories, equestrian grooming tools, or specialized field instruments. It is industrial elegance executed at the highest level. The underside tells a story no reproduction ever could. The bottom is hand engraved: “Jack Rochelle, High Point NC, USA” This inscription transforms the object from rare artifact to an epic American story. Born October 18, 1923, in Jamestown, North Carolina, John “Jack” Hardin Rochelle became one of High Point’s defining figures, a furniture industry legend, equestrian, decorated soldier, conservationist, and quintessential outdoorsman. Jack’s early life was marked by loss and resilience. Raised by strong maternal guidance and later adopted by T.V. Rochelle, who instilled in him a passion for furniture manufacturing, Jack developed drive, discipline, and ambition from a young age. He was a top equestrian in North Carolina, a Davidson College athlete and Kappa Sigma member, president of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Georgia, head of the ROTC Cavalry Unit, and a student of furniture design at the University of Michigan When World War II erupted, Jack joined the U.S. Army, receiving his commission as an officer. He served in the final Horse Cavalry...

Original 19th C Sleigh Bells - Extra Long - Perfect Jingle Bells Sound 39 Bells!

Original 19th C Sleigh Bells - Extra Long - Perfect Jingle Bells Sound 39 Bells!

Located in Red Lion, PA

19th Century Extra-Long Brass Sleigh Bells on Leather Belt: 39 Jingle Bells, Nearly 8 Feet Long A spectacular and highly authentic set of original 19th-century brass sleigh bells, featuring an impressive 39 hand-cast bells mounted on a nearly 8-foot-long leather strap. This exceptional antique offers not only a beautiful historic presence, but also the perfect traditional “Jingle Bells” sound, bright, rich, and unmistakably festive, just as sleigh bells should be. Each bell is solid brass, tightly fastened and fully functional, producing that magical tone that modern reproductions rarely achieve. The leather strap retains its original metal buckle and remains surprisingly supple and pliable for its age. With simple annual conditioning, it should continue to remain strong and flexible for years to come. The strap appears handmade and hand-stitched, and while there are small areas of thread loss consistent with age, the original workmanship was so solid that these minor imperfections do not compromise the structural integrity of the piece. The leather has developed a beautifully worn patina that speaks to more than a century of use, adding depth and authenticity to its appearance. In the 19th century, long straps of sleigh bells like this were affixed to horse harnesses so travelers could be heard approaching through winter snow, helping prevent collisions on narrow rural roads. Over time, this cheerful sound became woven into the imagery of the holiday season and ultimately inspired the classic Christmas carol, “Jingle Bells.” Today, authentic sets like this capture the warmth and romance of Victorian winter travel and embody the nostalgia of an old-fashioned Christmas. Because of its impressive length, this sleigh bell strap lends itself beautifully to holiday decorating. Many collectors enjoy hanging it on a door so it jingles each time someone enters or exits, while others drape it across a mantel for a warm, traditional seasonal moment. It also looks wonderful wrapped around a staircase railing, stretched along a festive tablescape as a conversation piece, or even displayed on a wall as a piece of functional folk art. However it’s arranged, the authentic sound and historic character bring instant Victorian holiday charm to any space. Original 19th-century sleigh bell straps in this size and condition have become increasingly difficult to find, especially with such a full complement of bells still attached. Modern reproductions, while decorative, seldom replicate the deep, resonant sound of genuine antique brass or the rich patina only time and use can create. For lovers of Americana, equestrian history, Victorian Christmas...

Very Rare 1930's Art Deco 21 Club Metal & Ceramic Jockey Equestrian Ashtray

Located in Red Lion, PA

Very Rare 1930s Art Deco 21 Club Jockey Ashtray, Metal & Ceramic Equestrian Smoking Accessory This exceptionally rare and substantial 1930s Art Deco jockey ashtray is a striking and historically important equestrian-themed smoking accessory, strongly attributed to the legendary 21 Club, New York. Combining sculptural cast metal with elegant glazed ceramic, the piece exemplifies the club’s distinctive blend of theatrical flair, sporting tradition, and Jazz Age glamour. At the center stands a cast metal jockey figure, depicted in a confident contrapposto stance atop an elevated mound. The jockey wears a classic red racing coat with yellow cuffs and buttons, a coordinating red-and-yellow jockey cap, white riding pants, and black and brown leather riding boots. One arm is outstretched holding a metal ring, while the other rests at the hip, conveying poise, movement, and authority, hallmarks of strong Art Deco figural design. The paint retains its vibrant coloration, with expected wear consistent with age and use (see photographs). The figure is mounted on a circular white ceramic ashtray, elegantly finished with a thin gold band along the rim and three gold-painted divots designed for resting cigars or cigarettes. The underside is fitted with brown felt, protecting surfaces and suggesting careful long-term use; the felt appears clean and may have been replaced at some point. The jockey is firmly secured to the base with no movement or instability. Founded in 1922, the 21 Club quickly became one of the most iconic private dining establishments in American history, renowned for its décor celebrating horse racing, jockey silks, equestrian trophies, and sporting culture. Jockey figures, both sculptural and decorative, were central to the club’s visual identity and appeared throughout its interiors in everything from wall mounts to bar accessories. Objects associated with the 21 Club were produced in extremely limited quantities, often for in-house use only or as special commissions, making surviving examples exceptionally rare. While this piece is unsigned and unmarked, extensive stylistic research and comparison strongly support its identification as an early 21 Club accessory, consistent with known jockey-themed ashtrays and sculptures from the period. Painted metal jockey shows expected wear to painted surfaces Ceramic ashtray in very good vintage condition Mild glaze crazing, no chips, cracks, or losses Minor wear to gold accents Felt base clean, possibly replaced Jockey securely mounted with no looseness or wobble Art Deco 21 Club artifacts, particularly those incorporating horse racing, jockey figures, and equestrian motifs, are among the most sought-after hospitality collectibles of the early 20th century. Large-format ashtrays of this quality, combining figural sculpture, ceramic, and metal, are exceedingly scarce, especially in this level of preservation. During the late 19th and early early 20th centuries, African American jockeys were among the most celebrated and highly respected athletes in American sport, dominating professional horse racing at its highest levels. In the decades following the Civil War, Black jockeys...

Art Deco Perfection: 1939 Enamel Travel Suitcase Makeup Compact Case, MUST SEE! An extraordinary embodiment of Jazz Age glamour, bon vivant luxury, and Art Deco wanderlust, this rare 1939 enamel travel suitcase makeup compact represents the pinnacle of 1930s design imagination. Objects of this caliber, playful yet exquisitely executed, are the very heart of serious Art Deco collecting, and it truly does not get better than this. Expertly hand-painted enamel, the compact is modeled as a miniature leather travel suitcase, complete with gold-tone corner protectors, buckled straps, and a sculptural handle that doubles as the opening mechanism. Tipping the handle gently releases the case, revealing a mirror-lined interior and a fully intact, original cosmetic arrangement: a compartment of nude-toned face powder (still present and loose), a smaller compartment of vivid rose blush with its original factory paper liner, and a petite puff, appearing barely used, if at all. The exterior is nothing short of breathtaking. The “leather” surface is entirely hand-painted, featuring linear horizontal brushstrokes on either side and a bold central squiggle motif, evoking the texture of fine luggage from the era. Encircling the case are brilliantly graphic Art Deco travel decals: Paris, London, New York, Roma, Monte Carlo, the Queen Mary, Havanna Club, and, most notably, the legendary French Art Deco ocean liner Normandie, each rendered in vivid color and crisp geometry. These travel motifs “dance” around a central engraved cartouche reading “Topaz Club ’39”, a tantalizing and deeply evocative personalization. During the 1930s, international travel became the ultimate symbol of sophistication and freedom, fueled by luxury steamships, glamorous hotels, elite clubs, and the rise of the cosmopolitan traveler. Suitcases plastered with travel labels became icons of worldliness, instantly signaling status, adventure, and taste. Art Deco embraced this imagery wholeheartedly, using bold typography, streamlined vessels, and exotic destinations to express modern life at its most glamorous. Novelty luxury pieces like this compact translated that ideal into intimate objects, portable symbols of privilege and pleasure. Comparable in spirit to the finest Cartier vanity cases...
