"Rebel", Rare Art Nouveau/Symbolist Print w/ Male Nude by Emma Goitein Dessau
By Emma Goitein Dessau
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A rare work by Emma Goitein Dessau, this color print entitled "Born to Work -- Rebel," depicts a kneeling nude male figure in chains, in the foreground, rebelling against the roiling crowd of nude figures behind him, all caught up in the crush of work and toil. The artist was clearly protesting the demands of modernity, and the toll it was taking on humanity, using a parade of beautifully captured nude figures to make her point. Goitein was German Jewish...

Beautifully drawn, clearly by an important artist, this depiction of two nude male figures sitting in the foreground of a columned facade -- perhaps alluding to the Classical sculpture of ancient Greece -- is not signed, perhaps due to the subtly homoerotic nature of the scene.
