Kilims, concrete and contrasts coalesce in this modest Beacon Hill apartment which, despite its historic locale, eschews the traditional Colonial trappings of the neighborhood in favor of an aesthetic that is more urban and alpine, less precious and staid -- a celebration of utility, raw materiality and of city living that is comfortable yet decidedly refined. Upon entry, a graphic 15' Beni Ourain runner from Marrakesh decends past a contemporary wall-mounted ash credenza into the kitchen where an expanse of hand-pieced black walnut countertop and backsplash cleaves upper and lower cabinets in disparate hues and punctuated with leather pulls. In the public space, a 1950s C.H. Hartshorn sculptural chair sits prominently between dual sitting areas centered by a wood-burning stove. Vintage Austrian school chairs surround an aluminum topped table in the dining area where a custom banquette of tufted wool and vinyl echoes the kitchen millwork.
