Hamptons Style
The gabled roof, walled courtyard, and softly rustling olive trees are more strongly evocative of the spirit of southern France than that of the Hamptons. The owners, a married couple with a grown daughter and grandchildren, wanted a retreat that was quietly luxurious, yet casual enough to be inviting for the sandy feet and wet bathing suits that are part of summertime family gatherings. Solis Betancourt & Sherrill went about giving the newly acquired nineteen sixties house a much needed update. They raised the roofline to give the central living area more height and make room for bedrooms upstairs, added a distinct vestibule to the entry area, and renovated the courtyard with stone paving and an antique fountain. The result is a residence with a European feel that also remains appropriate to the local architecture of Water Mill, New York.
