Home with a View
This elegant remodel was the result of a downsize. Achieving the classic and soft aesthetic of this home was the pleasant endeavor that began with editing and keeping only the best of the client’s furnishings to meld into a new design that was crisp and cosmopolitan. The client’s previous home was more than double the size, and distinctly French country. The interiors of the new house still needed a strong French influence, but it was closer in-town and called for a more urbane and studied approach. By introducing more of the delicate and deliberate lines of Louis XVI and French Art Deco, along with a few modern elements, we were able to obtain a wonderful balance. Sophistication and restraint were the constant directives employed when selecting furniture and decoration. There is just enough layering to achieve the right amount of interest. It was imperative that not only should every object and piece of furniture be truly beautiful, but they should tell a story. This project’s contents have a variety of age and origin, and pieces that belong to the family’s history are paired with pieces that have a history of their own. Another primary condition that influenced the outcome of this project was its relationship to the landscape. The primary rooms of the home all enjoy a practically pastoral view of sweeping lawns and lakes, and was therefore imperative that the interiors remain restrained in an effort not to compete with the surrounding site. Selecting soft neutral colors that picked up on various blues and greens allowed for a soothing, natural palette. Although the fabrics, furnishings and finishes are beautiful, nothing in this house calls out explicitly for your attention, rather, they work in harmony to create a home that has classic beauty and is calmly optimistic.
