Nantucket Harborfront

Vacation Home by Workshop APD in Nantucket, MA

Set on one of the island’s premier locations above Nantucket Harbor, this residence was reimagined as a serene, livable, art-filled retreat for a pair of longtime collectors. The clients, longtime island residents, saw potential in the elevated site and sought a more modern, considered “forever home”—one that could quietly showcase art and capture the calm of the landscape.

The original structure, built in the 1990s, was gutted and expanded. The firm preserved the footprint where possible, introducing a third bedroom, a reconfigured entry, and a series of graceful architectural moves that softened the home’s geometry. Curves became central to the language of the house, appearing in arched stairwells, custom millwork, and rounded steel doors. A vocabulary of natural finishes like reclaimed beams, oak cabinetry, and hand-applied plaster brought texture and a sense of timelessness to the interiors.

Framed views of the harbor shape the home’s layout. Every primary space opens north to the water, while a long, narrow new swimming pool runs along the edge of the lot, responding to zoning constraints. A new forward-facing gable balances the façade and helps stitch the addition into the existing roofline.

Inside, the palette remains quiet and collected. Bespoke and gallery furnishings mix with pieces acquired over a lifetime of travel. The client has described the house as feeling like a “remnant”—layered, personal, and honest. It lives lightly, with nothing superfluous, and everything considered.

The result is at once minimal and warm, architectural and intuitive. A home for living, viewing, and retreating.
