About the Item

Raised in Paris, he developed a passion for drawing from life, particularly at the Jardin des Plantes, where he studied wild animals. Recognized from adolescence, he exhibited at the age of 16 and gained early recognition at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. Supported by the Bing Gallery, he developed a body of work focused on animals, observed in European zoos and during numerous travels (Algeria, Egypt, Asia, Africa). Mobilized during World War I, he continued drawing and, after 1918, became a renowned artist and sought-after illustrator (The Jungle Book, Fables by La Fontaine). At the height of his career in the interwar period, he received numerous public commissions and honors. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1945, he continued working and traveling until the end of his life, leaving a major body of work devoted to the animal world.
