Our trusted network of 1stDibs sellers answer common questions
Does a menorah have seven or nine candles?
1 Answer
A modern menorah usually has nine candles. The purpose of the Shamash or central candle is to light the correct number of the remaining eight during each night of Hanukkah. Synagogues often display eight-candle menorahs that do not have Shamash candles. On 1stDibs, find a selection of menorahs.
