How can you tell if something is silver?
1 Answer

To tell if something is silver, first try placing a magnet next to it. If you notice attraction, the piece is likely either silver-plated or crafted out of a different metal because solid silver isn't magnetic. Hallmarks can also be a good way to identify silver. Silver marking systems vary from country to country, so use trusted online resources to learn what any marks on your piece indicate. An expert, such as a certified appraiser, an experienced jeweler or a knowledgeable antique dealer should also be able to assist you. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of silver jewelry, tableware, flatware and decorative objects.
