What is the difference between crewel and embroidery?
Crewel that dates back to the 16thh century is a type of embroidery, which uses two-ply worsted wool that creates a raised effect on the fabric because of the thicker wool yarn. Crewel is derived from the word ‘krua’ that means wool. Antique and vintage crewel embroidery pieces can be found on the 1stDibs, dating back to the 1960s and other eras.
