This artwork "Two Men with an Antelope" c.2000, is an original acrylic paint mixed media on paper by noted Swiss artist Francois Burland b.1958. The subject size (Sheet size) is 19.25 x 25.25 inches, framed size is 30.25 x 26.25 inches. Custom framed in a black frame, with white matting. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: François Burland (1958) was born in Lausanne (Switzerland). He began drawing in self-taught fashion at the end of his adolescence. He undertook a first trip to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula at the age of twenty. A few years later, he encountered the Tuaregs in the Sahara Desert. Enthused by their nomadic lifestyle, he began returning to the region regularly over some thirty years. During his long stays with the Tuaregs, he shared their daily life, including their dromedaries and witchcraft, but also their 4x4s, mobiles and kalachnikovs. This creator has produced an abundant and varied oeuvre. Depending on each series and on his inspiration of the day, he avails himself of a number of techniques and materials. Julian Schnabel was born in 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, to a father of Czechoslovakian descent and a mother from New York. After graduating from the University of Houston with a BFA, he began his artistic career in New York City. He was provided an artist’s studio through the Whitney Independent Study Program. He moved to Houston, Texas for a year, where he created his “first adult painting”, composed of oil, wax, and paste shaped on a canvas. This was the beginining of his signature artistic style, using pre-existing and unconventional materials to create his art. His first solo exhibition was at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas, in 1976. He moved back to New York City working as a cook, then spent time travelled in Europe, where he was fascinated by Caravaggio and Fra Angelico; these influences led lead to Schnabel’s creation of ten wax paintings in Milan. After another trip to Europe a few years later, he was inspired to create his now-famous plate paintings. The plate paintings incorporated smashed plates and later glass and porcelain to adhere onto a canvas, painting on top of them and thereby mixing objects with flat surfaces. Schnabel’s paintings often use unconventional materials, like velvet or putty. His work is featured in various US and international museums and galleries in New York City, including Switzerland, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Munich, and more. In 1990, Schnabel directed and wrote his first film, Basquiat, a biopic following the life of friend and fellow artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. "Breathless Civilization" In this work, I explore the fragility of human systems—the moment when the line between protection and vulnerability begins to dissolve. Gas masks, once symbols of survival, become artifacts here. They no longer protect; instead, they carry the memory of fear and the instinct to endure. I intentionally build a tense, almost fractured surface—through aggressive drips, layered textures, and broken, gestural marks. For me, this is a visual language of urban decay and emotional residue, traces of what remains after overload, anxiety, and loss of control. The fragmented elements within the composition are not just formal—they reflect a world where survival has become automatic, stripped of human presence. I’m interested in that shift—from conscious existence to something mechanical. This work does not follow a direct narrative. I see it as an artifact—a trace of a civilization that adapted too late. Air, in this piece, is not only a physical necessity but also a metaphor for freedom—something increasingly restricted, filtered, and controlled. By merging painting with object, I intentionally blur the boundaries between mediums, reinforcing the central tension of the work: protection and vulnerability, presence and disappearance."
