This very nice drawing is a view of a romantic garden. In the background, we see a high base topped by a statue of a 19th century figure along with other architectural ruins. Central to the composition is a leafy tree with a leaning trunk. The beautiful flowering iris plant in the foreground gave the drawing its title. The iris has a very long history, as it was known even at the time of the ancient Egyptians and other ancient peoples. It is well documented that in Europe the iris's rhizome was used as a linen perfume. It was named for Iris, the Greek messenger of the gods, who according to Greek mythology, had wings of gold shining with dew, which when lit by the sun rays were decked with all the colors of the rainbow.
