About the Item

Born in 1989 in Tunisia and raised in France, Lis Sam is a self-taught artist whose practice explores the intersection of photography, sculpture, and the natural world. His work is defined by meticulously composed images that blur the boundaries between portraiture and installation, transforming organic materials into immersive visual environments. The genesis of his new series, Metamorphosis, can be traced to a formative visit to a butterfly greenhouse in southern France. Observing the delicate movement of butterflies among dense botanical landscapes, Lis Sam became captivated by the illusion of feminine forms emerging from their wings. This experience gave rise to an enduring body of work in which the butterfly serves not only as a visual motif but also as a symbol of transformation, fragility, and continual renewal. Each composition is conceived as a sculptural construction before it is photographed. Flowers, foliage, and handcrafted botanical elements are assembled into intricate forms that envelop the figure, dissolving the distinction between body and landscape. Photography becomes the final stage of an expansive studio practice, preserving ephemeral installations that exist only momentarily before they are transformed into lasting images. Rather than depicting nature as subject matter, Lis Sam employs it as both material and metaphor. His compositions investigate the ways beauty, identity, and impermanence coexist, proposing the human figure as an extension of the living world rather than apart from it. Through this synthesis of natural form and artistic intervention, his work occupies a space between reality and invention, where the fleeting becomes enduring and the familiar assumes a mythic dimension. Lis Sam’s practice reflects a sustained interest in transformation as both a visual and philosophical condition. His images invite contemplation of the cyclical rhythms of nature and the poetic possibilities that emerge when sculpture, photography, and the organic world converge into a singular artistic language.
