About the Item

Marcel Dzama (b. 1974) is one of the most successful contemporary Canadian artists, beloved for his unmistakable version of Surrealism. Born in Winnipeg, Dzama achieved an international reputation by the time he was 30. As one of the founding members of the Royal Art Lodge in the 1990s, Dzama contributed to the renaissance of figurative art both in Canada and beyond. His works are instantly recognizable for their subject and style, often taking banal scenes or characters and injecting them with menacing, eerie or twisted details that can border on the absurd. Born in Colombia, Oscar Murillo (b. 1986) has developed an expansive and interdisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, video, and collaborative projects. Across these varied mediums, his work explores the complexities of cultural exchange, examining how people, objects, languages, and ideas move across borders and become transformed through circulation and encounter. This work on paper was collaboratively created by Dzama and Murillo during Room Services, a multi-day drawing and printing performance on the occasion of Printed Matter's 2016 New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1. Combining Dzama's surrealist figurative style with Murillo's gestural mark-making, this enticing work captures the best that both artists have to offer. Dzama's work can be found in a host of prestigious public and private collections including Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the MoMA, Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. He is particularly favored by celebrity collectors including Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey and Steve Martin. Questions about this piece? Questions about this artwork? Contact us.
