About the Item
"Confubius" by Spanish artist Henar Iglesias is a rare one of a kind abstract geometric partridge feather artwork with an optical illusion quality. The technique employed in the creation of "Confubius" draws upon the Mesoamerican craftsmanship used by featherwork artists known as amantecas. It distinguishes itself from other techniques by fixing the partridge feathers with wax onto paper, preventing it from curling. This process is intensely laborious and a nearly extinct practice in the art world. This artwork is mounted on wood, with no glass or acrylic, allowing the viewer to interact directly with the texture of the feathers.
"Confubius" was a finalist for the LOEWE Craft Prize in 2019 and was selected to take part in the LOEWE Craft Prize exhibition in Tokyo in 2019.
Mobius Strip, a mathematical figure with a single surface and an infinite path. Boundaries blur and limits fade away, achieving a fusion of the inside and the outside into a continuum.
Henar Iglesias is a Spanish artist, born into a family dedicated to art, both graphic and handmade. Growing up between her father’s painting studio and her mother’s high-fashion millinery workshop allowed her to playfully learn a wide variety of crafts. It was at the age of eight when she discovered that no one in Spain was creating feather appliques anymore. Iglesias’ parents nurtured her curiosity for ancestral arts and crafts through art galleries and archaeological museums. While studying mathematics at University, she realized that her destiny was to revitalize the craft of feather artistry.
In her early 20’s, Iglesias discovered Mesoamerican feather art, a practice that intertwines art with sacred symbolism. She was fascinated by the technical skill of the amantecas (skilled artists capable of capturing the desires and longings of the human heart in each piece), a mastery that has never ceased to inspire and fuel her desire to explore the infinite aesthetic and artistic possibilities of feathers.
Since then, her passion has been to revitalize forgotten techniques from different cultures, infusing them with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic influenced by her mathematical background and artistic influences. Immersing herself in these cultures allowed her to discover a desire to bring to our present day not only a part of their cosmogony but also their vision of the relationship between humans and nature, as well as their vision of the most exquisite luxury.
