About the Item

A wonderful impressionist oil painting of three young girls and a doll carriage on the path by American artist Lee Lufkin Kaula (1865-1957). Kaula was born in Erie, PA and studied with Charles Melville Dewey in New York and Edmond Aman-Jean at the Academie Colarossi in Paris. She met fellow artist and her future husband, William Jurian Kaula, in France. They eventually shared studio space at Fenway Studios in Boston, painting together, and summering near New Ipswich, New Hampshire. She was a member of several Boston art associations including the Copley Society, the Guild of Boston Artists and the Boston Society of Watercolorists. She became well known for her impressionist and luminous landscapes and village scenes. Oil on canvas, title inscribed on verso stretcher in graphite “Vacation Days, Lee Lufkin Kaula, 311 Fenway Studios Boston,” and housed in a fine decorative molded giltwood frame. A study or sketch of this painting can be found on page 93 of the book “Two Lives:One Passion, The Life and Work of William Jurian Kaula and Lee Lufkin Kaula” by Carol G.J. Scollans.
