About the Item

Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847–1933) holds a significant place in the history of French painting, primarily for his evocative depictions of everyday life and his mastery in capturing the essence of Parisian street scenes. A painter of the Belle Époque, Gilbert was celebrated for his keen observation and ability to infuse ordinary moments with vitality and charm, bridging the worlds of Realism and Impressionism. Gilbert’s career took off with his genre paintings of bustling markets, flower sellers, and street vendors. His works, such as Les Marchandes de Fleurs (The Flower Sellers), depict a vivid tapestry of urban life, underscored by the artist’s attention to detail and sensitivity to light. Unlike the sweeping landscapes favored by Impressionists, Gilbert focused on the intimacy of human interaction, making his works relatable and emotionally resonant. One of Gilbert’s most notable achievements is his exceptional skill in rendering textures, from the delicate petals of flowers to the weathered hands of laborers. This talent aligns him with the tradition of Realist painters like Gustave Courbet, yet his use of soft light and vibrant color palettes reveals an Impressionistic influence, setting him apart as a unique voice in 19th and early 20th-century art. His works also serve as historical documents, offering insight into the socio-economic dynamics of Paris during a time of rapid urbanization. Gilbert’s legacy lies in his ability to elevate the mundane into the poetic, preserving the human spirit within the fabric of daily life. His paintings remain a testament to the enduring beauty of ordinary moments. Victor Gabriel Gilbert, (French, 1847-1933) Scene de Marche Signed V. Gilbert l.r. Sharing Bon-Bons
By Victor Gabriel Gilbert
Located in Missouri, MO
Early 20th Century Oil Painting by Victor Gilbert. Canvas dimensions 14.75 x 18 inches. Framed dimensions 22 x 25 inches. Born Paris, France 1847; Died 1933 Victor Gilbert's natural ability as an artist was recognized early, but his family lacked the financial resources to send the young man to the École des Beaux-Arts. Rather than enrolling in the École, Gilbert was apprenticed to Eugene Adam as an artisan painter and decorator. His only formal education was evening classes with Pierre Levasseur at the École de la ville de Paris. Perhaps it was his early immersion into la vie quotidienne that formed the basis for his later choices of subject matter for his art, that of the markets and streets of Paris. Despite his lack of formal training, Gilbert's admissions to the Paris Salons of 1873 and 1874 were very well received by audiences and critics alike; at this time he was supported by the dealer Paul Martin, who was an important proponent of the Impressionist movement. Gilbert emerged in the early 1880s as the primary Realist painter to record the French marketplace...
