Those canvases emerges as a testament to Ando's multifaceted artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from the raw, visceral themes of "Battle Royale," the canvases becomes a stage for the juxtaposition of innocence and the harsh reality of a dystopian world. Ando's night sketches are a testament to his keen observation of the city's vibrant life. In those canvas, Ando captures not just the physicality of Tokyo at night but delves into the emotional undercurrents. The schoolgirl becomes a symbol of resilience, an emblem of survival amidst chaos. The flowers, meticulously painted, symbolize hope and growth, a stark contrast to the grim narrative of "Battle Royale." The fusion of these elements creates a harmonious yet poignant composition. Ando's mastery lies not only in his technical prowess but in his ability to infuse narrative depth into every stroke. Each flower, each cloud, becomes a silent storyteller, resonating with the viewer's emotions. Those canvases beckons the audience to explore beyond the surface, inviting them to unravel the layers of symbolism embedded in each detail. Ando's canvaseses becomes a visual symphony, where the schoolgirl dances through the intricate melodies of Tokyo's nightlife, accompanied by the ever-present flowers and clouds. As a piece within the larger oeuvre of Ando's works, this canvas stands as a testament to his commitment to storytelling through art. It serves as a bridge between the stark realities of a dystopian narrative and the enchanting dreamscape he creates within the vibrant nights of Tokyo. The fusion of pop culture, literary inspiration, and a deep connection to Tokyo's streets makes those canvases a captivating chapter in Hiro Ando's artistic saga.

The Conversation II

Signed lower left Elizabeth Higgins (Canadian, b. 1960) Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work. Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena...
