About the Item

Signed (at lower right): Robert Vickrey A leading exponent of Magic Realism, Robert Vickrey painted provocative images of figures and objects––among them nuns, clowns, children, and bicycles––situated in stark, empty spaces. His skillful manipulation of pictorial devices such as shadows, angles, and elevated viewpoints, heightened the enigma and psychological intensity that pervades his paintings, in addition to imbuing them with a near-abstract quality. Explaining his distinctive approach, Vickrey stated: I paint all my paintings in my head. Most of them are dreamscapes . . . in movies, dreams are always portrayed as being very fuzzy and blurred. . . . A real dream, however, is very sharp and vivid, departing from reality only slightly. . . . I paint pictures that look like scenes from movies . . . [and] try to transcend the objects I portray, telling you more about them that you might otherwise see (as quoted in Philip Eliasoph, Robert Vickrey: The Magic of Realism [New York: Hudson Hills Press, 2008], p. 11). Born in New York City, Vickrey received his artistic training at the Yale School of Fine Arts (B.A., B.F.A.) and the Art Students of League, New York, where his teachers included the realist painters Reginald Marsh and Kenneth Hayes Miller. While most of his contemporaries adopted the gestural and highly emotive approach of the Abstract Expressionists, Vickrey––a superb draftsman––developed a painstaking realist technique in which he defined his subject matter with thin, meticulously applied strokes of paint. He also set himself apart from his milieu by choosing to work in egg tempera, a challenging, age-old medium that he mastered to perfection. In addition to creating his haunting temperas, Vickrey also achieved renown as a portraitist, especially during the 1950s and 1960s, when he executed likenesses of prominent people such as John F. Kennedy and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor for Time magazine. Equally at home with a pen as he was with a brush, he was the author of New Techniques in Egg Tempera (with Diane Cochrane, 1973); The Artist at Work (1979); The Affable Curmudgeon (1987); and Cape Cod’s Cockiest Crook, or, Con Man’s Carnival (1996). He likewise delved into filmmaking and playwriting with equal vigor. Vickrey died in Naples, Florida, on April 17, 2011. Examples of his work can be found in major collections throughout the United States, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Academy of Design, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
