About the Item
In 2015 I visited many ancient olive groves in Italy. The Province of Lecce is known for having the oldest trees. The groves, only accessible by stone paths or mule tracks, give a sense of the past. Here the landscape speaks in the language of origins: remnants of a crumbling stone wall suggest absence while the landscape beyond can be seen through holes of a hollowed trunk, creating a dramatic presence. It is easy to spot the oldest trees; some have vacuous trunks as large as caves displaying protuberances and ripples that ancient trees accumulate with time. Expressive in form, the trees stretch out in wild and weirdly contorted shapes. Many have lived over a thousand years, still bearing fruit in great age.
But unknown to farmers, meadow spittlebugs were quickly multiplying. These small insects carry a host of tiny particles, an invisible army identified as Xylella fastidious, infecting each tree they feed on. By the end of the year, it is reported over one million olive trees in the Salento Peninsula are infected. Many groves are ravaged. Some trees looked burnt with brown leaves and dead branches. In an attempt to contain the virus from spreading into Northern Europe, farmers are ordered by the government to cut down their heritage trees, resulting in economic catastrophe and heartbreak.
Seven years later, I take out the olive tree pictures. In an attempt to gain control over the uncontrollable, I choose one of the images and make a test print on whisper-thin Japanese paper. It is a simple gesture, an attempt to reclaim agency. The paper is very fragile. I paint adhesive on the back and apply sheets of silver leaf.
I look at the print. As light falls on the tree, a heavenly silver glow shows through the highlights.
A hero, god or king? I can’t decide which.

Angelina by Keith Carter, 2021, Archival Pigment Print
By Keith Carter b.1948
Located in Denton, TX
Angelina by Keith Carter presents a sublime scene. A branch dips into the calm and quiet river. Trees line the river's edge, extending back to the horizon. The stillness in the water reflect the overhanging foliage, creating a dreamlike scene.
Angelina by Keith Carter is listed as a 16 x 16 inch archival pigment print, with the paper size measuring 22 x 17 inches. It is available in an edition of 25. This photograph is signed, titled, dated, and numbered in pencil on print verso by Keith Carter. Angelina is from Carter's series, Ghostlight.
Keith Carter is an American photographer who is known for his dreamlike black and white photographs of the figure, animals, and meaningful objects. He began photographing new and unknown realities using East Texas natives as subjects. This population and background setting spoke to the folklore, religious, and cultural motifs Carter was visually exploring. Since his start in Texas, his work continues to push imaginative realms while reaching prestigious artistic and technical status.
In 1970, Carter earned a Business Management degree from Lamar University and began his career as a commercial photographer while working on personal projects. These personal projects have become a strong and highly sought after collection that have become twelve published monographs. Carter currently teaches photography at Lamar University as a Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. He travels worldwide providing photography lectures and workshops for artists.

Alcornoque Evora, Silver Gelatin Print
By Miguel Winograd
Located in Miami Beach, FL
The artist looks for a path between tangled branches. Reconfiguring a personal archive of diverse Colombian landscapes, experimenting with a variety of printing materials to reconstruct a whole from these fragments, recreating a forest in the center of Bogotá. Wynograd also examines a historical archive of landscapes, the roots of his own vision. He believes that the old mimetic dream of photography is still alive. These exercises aim to weave a series of visual connections and reflect on the complex web of interdependencies between humans and nature. If there is a light of hope in the midst of overlapping crises, it is the awareness that we all belong to a whole. Perhaps these images can help in that reflection.
