Hans Schleger 'Zero' London Transport Bus Stop Request c. 1970 Original Poster
Located in London, GB
To see our other original vintage travel posters including more pre-war London Transport posters, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" - or send us a message if you cannot find the poster you want. Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Bus Stop Request Poster Screenprint poster c. 1970 16.5x18 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex...

Friendship /// Abstract Geometric Alexander Calder American Modern Lithograph
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) Title: "Friendship" Portfolio: Flying Colors *Signed and dated by Calder in the plate (printed signature) lower right Year: 1974 Medium: Original Lithograph on Arches paper Limited edition: 3,000 Printer: Atelier Fernand Mourlot, Paris, France Publisher: State Street, New York, NY for Braniff International Airlines, Dallas, TX Sheet size: 20" x 26" Condition: Light edgewear to upper left and right edges. Minor skinning from previous mounting tape on verso. In otherwise very good condition with strong colors Notes: Provenance: one owner ever - private collection - Dallas, TX. Comes from Calder's 1974 "Flying Colors" portfolio of 5 lithographs. The 5 works include "Beastie", "Convection", "Friendship", "Skybird", and "Sky Swirl". Printed in 5 colors: red, blue, yellow, orange, and black. "Copyright The Flying Colors Collection 1975" chop mark/ blind stamp lower right. In 1972, Dallas based Braniff International Airways commissioned Alexander Calder to paint a full-size Douglas DC-8-62 airliner as a “flying canvas.” Models of the aircraft were sent to Calder at his studio in France in November of 1972, and work commenced. Braniff announced the Calder collaboration to the public on June 4, 1973. This was to be the first time that an artist had ever painted a jetliner used in regular airline service. Painting began at the carrier’s Dallas Love Field Operations and Maintenance Base. Calder supervised the painting of the aircraft at the Braniff Base, and personally painted the two left side engine nacelles with two of his designs called “Beastie” and “Sunburst”. While at the hangar Calder befriended many of the Braniff Maintenance and Engineering personnel and even painted his unique designs on their lunch pails and toolboxes. At the time, some of the employees did not like the designs but quickly changed their mind once they realized they became owner’s of their own Calder masterpieces. The "Flying Colors" portfolio of five lithographs commemorates this historic project which created a piece of artwork that was seen by more people than have looked at any other single work of art in the 20th century. Biography: Alexander Calder was born on July 22, 1898 in Lawnton, Pa. He attended the Art Students League, where he was influenced by artists of the Ash Can school...

"Lines in Color, On Color, " Silkscreen, Orange with Blue, Signed, Numbered
Located in Detroit, MI
"Lines in Color, On Color" is a vibrant orange contrasted with blue lines that though abstract is geometric and organized through the various linear vanishing points. Despite the lines appearing to veer off in numerous directions, which they do, the overall effect is one of a complicated, organized and satisfying whole. It is a satisfying visual whole because the linear activity is anchored by the several dark blue points in strategically located around the perimeter of the canvas. Solomon "Sol" LeWitt was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia on September 9, 1928. He was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred instead of "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965. The first biography of the artist, Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas, by Lary Bloom, was published by Wesleyan University Press in the spring of 2019. After receiving a BFA from Syracuse University in 1949, LeWitt traveled to Europe where he was exposed to Old Master paintings. Shortly thereafter, he served in the Korean War, first in California, then in Japan, and finally in Korea. LeWitt moved to New York City in 1953 and set up a studio on the Lower East Side, in the old Ashkenazi Jewish settlement on Hester Street. During this time, he studied at the School of Visual Arts while also pursuing his interest in design at Seventeen magazine...

I Miss You Already (Ed. 9/25)
Located in Dallas, TX
"Many of the most common flowers sold in flower shops around the world are grown in equatorial countries. Unfortunately, many of these countries have loose to no regulations on the synthetic pesticides and fertilizers used to grow the flowers. These pesticides and fertilizers find their way into waterways, and rivers and eventually make their way into our oceans, causing environmental havoc along the way. Fertilizer runoff can trigger sudden explosions of marine algae capable of disrupting ocean ecosystems and even producing "dead zones" in the sea. Pesticides can affect coral reproduction, growth, and other physiological processes. Herbicides, in particular, can affect the symbiotic algae (plants). This can damage their partnership with coral and result in bleaching. This image contemplates the connection between the flowers we buy, and the effect commercial flowers have on the majestic and fragile reef systems around the world. In keeping with one of PangeaSeed Foundation’s mottos, “As Above, So Below”, this image imagines Clownfish, an iconic reef dweller living within the flowers we consume. Their home is being threatened and altered by pesticide runoff, pictured here as a band of bleached out flowers. You can make a difference by the choices you make on a daily basis. This Valentine’s Day, consider buying local organically grown flowers. Consider picking your own wildflowers. Consider giving flower paintings and drawings…. ( i Might know a guy). Consider doing this every time you think about gifting flowers or decorating your home. The consumption choices we make have direct effects on our planet. Next time you buy flowers, think about our Mother Nature." - Jet Martinez

Original 'Produits Lavocat' vintage poster for Force and Energy
Located in Spokane, WA
Original vintage poster: Lavocat aliments irradies. Force, Energie par les produits. This is a classic French late Art Deco period poster featuring a buff rugby player almost outpacing a steed - due no doubt to Lavocat, an 'irradiated' food. Even today, the American FDA believes that irradiating food can burn off harmful bacteria, airborne germs, and other microbes which can adversely affect food. We love this poster's depth of color, texture, and oomph - powerful and very, very Art Deco. This poster is an original Art Deco lithograph. This poster is related more to sports and running than food, but food provides energy. Note that the red is cherry red since different monitors produce the red color of this poster in different qualities. Excellent condition, undated on the poster. Behind the rugby runner is a black horse that appears to be neck and neck...

Fine Art Prints for Sale — Animal Prints, Abstract Prints, Nude Prints and Other Prints

Decorating with fine art prints — whether they’re figurative prints, abstract prints or another variety — has always been a practical way of bringing a space to life as well as bringing works by an artist you love into your home.

Pursued in the 1960s and ’70s, largely by Pop artists drawn to its associations with mass production, advertising, packaging and seriality, as well as those challenging the primacy of the Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, printmaking was embraced in the 1980s by painters and conceptual artists ranging from David Salle and Elizabeth Murray to Adrian Piper and Sherrie Levine.

Printmaking is the transfer of an image from one surface to another. An artist takes a material like stone, metal, wood or wax, carves, incises, draws or otherwise marks it with an image, inks or paints it and then transfers the image to a piece of paper or other material.

Fine art prints are frequently confused with their more commercial counterparts. After all, our closest connection to the printed image is through mass-produced newspapers, magazines and books, and many people don’t realize that even though prints are editions, they start with an original image created by an artist with the intent of reproducing it in a small batch. Fine art prints are created in strictly limited editions — 20 or 30 or maybe 50 — and are always based on an image created specifically to be made into an edition.

Many people think of revered Dutch artist Rembrandt as a painter but may not know that he was a printmaker as well. His prints have been preserved in time along with the work of other celebrated printmakers such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol. These fine art prints are still highly sought after by collectors.

“It’s another tool in the artist’s toolbox, just like painting or sculpture or anything else that an artist uses in the service of mark making or expressing him- or herself,” says International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) vice president Betsy Senior, of New York’s Betsy Senior Fine Art, Inc.

Because artist’s editions tend to be more affordable and available than his or her unique works, they’re more accessible and can be a great opportunity to bring a variety of colors, textures and shapes into a space.

For tight corners, select small fine art prints as opposed to the oversized bold piece you’ll hang as a focal point in the dining area. But be careful not to choose something that is too big for your space. And feel free to lean into it if need be — not every work needs picture-hanging hooks. Leaning a larger fine art print against the wall behind a bookcase can add a stylish installation-type dynamic to your living room. (Read more about how to arrange wall art here.)
