About the Item
Line is the operative formal element in the work shown here, but there are many other lines in play. Pieces walk a line between drawings that might be tapestries or sculptures or paintings or quilts and sculptures that draw in space. Lines delineate, but as often they act contrarily, blurring distinctions—is a red line a vein or a tendril, is a purple one a cell, an insect wing or a bit of lichen?
More fundamentally though, there is a fine fragile line between existence and its opposite, a line we all walk and which the small and large environments that contain us walk as well. Environmental and personal vulnerability has been a longstanding focus in my work. Waterways, in particular, with their almost human balance of fragility and strength, their perseverance through adversity—much of it inflicted by us—trace lines of stress and hope through our landscapes—as well as a strong line through the body of my work.
There is also the fine fragile line between the internal and the external. Handmade paper and glass—translucent, delicate, and yet unexpectedly tough and durable—expose the internal and yet protect it. They are skin and structure, portal and shield. For decades, these materials have played a central and natural role in work exploring dualities of vulnerability and strength.
Finally, the line between existence and its opposite has been sharpened for all of us in recent years with the climate crisis and, more recently, the Covid pandemic. At the same time, the line between our individual fragilities and those of the collective and the planet have been blurred. Individually, we have often been isolated—themes of escape and flight, literal and imagined, figure heavily in work I’ve produced in the pandemic period—but our fragile bodies and our fragile environment are inextricably linked. More than ever, we walk the line together.

Nancy Cohen
Nancy Cohen has an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. Recent projects include installations in Karmiel, Israel; the CODA Museum in Holland; the Katonah Museum of Art in NY and a collaboration with environmentalists based on the Mullica River for the Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey. She has been awarded a Pollock Krasner Grant, residencies at The Millay Colony and Yaddo and multiple Fellowships in Sculpture and Works on Paper from the NJ State Council on the Arts. Cohen was born in Queens, New York, and lives in Jersey City, NJ.

"Synopsis" by Elsbeth Halvorsen Vever (American, b. 1929). Box sculpture combines aluminum, sand, bone, glass and a magnifier. Signed "Elsbeth Vever 1982" on verso. Image, 24.50"L x 13.75"H x 4"W.
Using bone as the central image Elsbeth has assembled an optical and visual experience. One view is the magnification and juxtaposition of the floating effect of the curvature in the stainless steel background; stand back and it's a hologram effect. The first image shows clearly the hologram effect available to the eye of the viewer.
From a review of her show of box constructions in Providence, Rhode Island: "Viewing her box constructions is a lot like a walk in the moonlight. What we know, or think, to be true in the hard brightness of daytime reality dissolves into an amorphous space of multiple possibilities and perspectives."
Born in Purdys, New York, Elspeth Halvorsen is the daughter, granddaughter, and mother of professional artists. She has studied at prestigious academic and artistic institutions includingthe New School for Social Research, the Art Students League, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1955, she moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, establishing her home and studio in the former residence of Mark Rothko. Provincetown not only remains her home but also acts as a personal, social, and artistic source of inspiration for her work.
