Alonso Mateo
Silla con un Brazo de Mas

About the Item

gilded wood with gold leaf and fabric For over a decade Mateo has focused his work on the analysis of the rites and symbols of power, the high classes, aristocracy, and royalty. He is known among friends and colleagues as El Condo (the Count), a nickname given due to his appearance and manners that at times can be perceived as a perpetual complementary performance for his production of objects. Mateo’s gaze has examined and reevaluated the environments and phenomena inherent in the purchasing power of the upper classes, such as jewels, haute couture, and the ornament and appliqué work of precious metals in furnishings. The artist also comments on the genetic problems typical of royal families resulting from the practice of endogamy, marrying within your own class and social and ethnic group, for the sake of preserving a supposed purity of lineage. He approaches this subject with a refined and sarcastic humor, as seen in Silla con pie Equino and Silla con un Brazo de Mas, two pieces of Imperial style furniture. These two chairs are presented as royal portraits; assembled with well-padded seat cushions, lavish upholstery, and carved and gilded wooden legs and framework. Silla con pie Equino translates to ‘chair with foot drop’ or ‘chair with Equinus’, an ailment of the ankle limiting range of motion to bring the top of the foot toward the shin, resulting in a dropped foot. Silla con un Brazo de Mas translates to ‘chair with one more arm’. These royal portraits point out the congenital deformations that can present themselves through the practice of endogamy; beautifully crafted pieces of furniture, created with the finest materials, with an unexpected flaw.

The Rare Earth artworks grew out of my investigative research in 2009 while working on a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (SARF) application. That resulted in a body of work titled “Imagos”– photo/journalism images that capture a moment in history and immediately place the viewer at that moment in time. While navigating Landsat records of Earth's land surfaces from space I discovered large areas of disturbed landscapes. These were immense open pit mines at numerous locations world wide, many of which were Rare Earth mines or REEs. Sculpture; 'Portal'
By Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat
Located in New York, NY
The artistic collaboration of Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat has produced a thought-provoking body of sculptures, paintings, and constructions. Nature, childhood memories, and everyday archetypes take shape in unexpected combinations of materials. The works emerged as the tactile and visual senses channeled the ritualistic power and materiality of selected artifacts. The resulting objects exist in a space between what they were originally and what they could become. A wheel, for example, is distorted as if seen through a prism. Their collaboration grew out of years of shaping materials into one-of-a-kind objects. Intuitively, the process of creating with their hands took an inward turn. Prism is a travelogue through memories and dreams, yielding abstract forms that capture moments of transformation. Van Wifvat grew up with eight siblings and studied sculpture and environmental design in Minneapolis at MCAD. In 1979, he opened a storefront art gallery to promote the work of local artists. The space featured printed materials—art books, periodicals, fanzines, and postcard’s. Wifvat moved to New York in 1983 to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons. In 1987, he co-founded Van Gregory & Norton design studio, specializing in convex mirrors and curtain hardware...

Esmeralda Mine, (Rare Earth), NV

I began to incorporate these Landsat images into a new body of work titled "Rare Earth." Each Rare Earth artwork includes an archival image of a specific mine rendered in classic 3D (anaglyph) off-registration referencing mid-century exuberant optimism, geopolitical history, cultural signifiers, symbolic design patterns and phenomena The formal and elegant composition belies the actual relationship of the cause and effect of rare earth mining. --- The Rare Earth artworks grew out of my investigative research in 2009 while working on a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (SARF) application. Rococo Diptych
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: This diptych started several years ago during a public art performance called Nike's Advice. I painted 130 feet of unprimed canvas with the public. It was scary! I don't consider myself a painter. I was having to accept Nike's Advice myself ... as in "Just Do It". Later, I used my sewing machine to stitch decorative lines. Gold-leaf was added before the surface was coated in UV filtering epoxy. The works are mounted with copper roofing nails to a stretcher bar with gold painted sides. Keywords: painted textile, abstract, mixed media Artist Biography: Susan Lenz...
