About the Item

It is marvelous to find discoveries such as Lorrie Goulet's female form, one of our few American women sculptors who direct carved in marble. Goulet has an attractive technique of using polished stone for the areas of the flesh and keeping the stone textured and rough in all other areas. She even puts in a wash over this unpolished area to create further play of depth and highlight. This come out of the work of Auguste Rodin and others who developed this effective technique in the modern era of sculpture. As a direct carver, Goulet approached her materials without preparatory studies or maquettes, working intuitively with the stone as she found it. 14 1/4 x 6 x 8 1/4 inches Base: 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches Overall height: 19 inches This is a great size to put on any table or shelf and it moves around easily. The stone is an attractive and unusual shade of light green instead of the usual Vermont green and black stone seen so commonly. A direct carve is with this work - a unique piece. Goulet was a sculptor whose career may have been overshadowed by her husband, sculptor José de Creeft, and never fully received the recognition she deserved in a field few women pursued. Though somewhat overlooked in terms of achieving broader acclaim, her oeuvre reflects a life marked by tireless work, a dedicated career, and unwavering commitment to her art. “Direct carving is a way of life. It’s a way of seeing things” – Lorrie Goulet Signed: Goulet at base Overall height with plinth: 19 inches

An award-winning sculptor, photographer, and printmaker, Sharon Loper developed her sculptural practice through two decades of study, both at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and in private studio practice.
