About the Item

Coming from a family with a long artistic tradition. Vincent Du Bois accomplished to synthesize both classical background and comtemporary vision. From Albert Anker or Robert Hainard, his ancesters painters and sculptors, he took the respect of «la maniera». From his commitment to his time, he forged his personal artistic linguage. Vincent Du Bois was early thought the art of sculpture in a very traditional and academical way. After finishing school in Geneva and a stone sculptor education in the marble family company, he took studies at Artigani in Pietra Santa (Toscane) in Italy, where he could sharpen his perception for both the human figures and his first personal projects. Most of all, he lived his passion for marble carving. After years of constant contact with the white Carrara marble, he chose to break free from this tradition for some time in order to question his artisctic values. He then moves to the United States, where he was selected for the Master program at the Art Institute of Chicago. For two years and a half he dedicated himself to all kinds of experimental and conceptual works. By opening his mind to all sorts of materials, he both enriched his art and has given it more freedom. After obtaining his MFA, he set up his own studio back in Geneva, where he now devides his days between the creation of his art, the development of original architectural or design projects, and the restauration of antique marbles pieces for which he is very demanded. With his passion for classical practice as well as for conceptual research, Vincent Du Bois has in fact created a very original and strong artistic path in which are melted, for instance, figurative works (like the portraits he models in clay and carves in stone), and the urban installations he combines with recycled materials. This is what characterizes this contemporary artist who has shown his works in many countries as far as Japan, and whose philosophy souffers for no limits in scales or types of materials. The classical hand enrobes with harmony his curiosity for his time. Be it figurative or abstract, ancient or contemporary what counts is this sense of balance and complementarity: In his studio one can breath the physical interaction of the emotion emanating from forms all together with the pleasure of reflection: A dialog between the senses and the spirit.
