Concentric, Amagansett, NY, 2020
Located in Hudson, NY
ABOUT “There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages. “Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?” “Mushroom #3” a charred white oak sculpture that is versatile in design so it can act as an end table or a stool. It is masterfully crafted and brings to mind the redwood stools...

Perspective in Orange
Located in Grosse Pointe Park, MI
"Perspective in Orange" is a profound exploration of life's journey and the dynamic nature of perspective. Crafted from steel, then painted, this Constructivist style maquette (model) offers a visually striking representation of the transformative power of shifting viewpoints. The geometric lines that define the sculpture play a central role in conveying its message. As viewers encircle the work, they experience a fascinating interplay of disappearing and reappearing lines, shapes and forms. This clever use of perspective mirrors...

Academical Plaster Horse Sculpture From The Parthenon Marbles at British Museum
Located in Roma, IT
An Academic plaster sculpture study from the Marble statue from the East pediment of the Parthenon that showed the miraculous birth of the goddess Athena from the head of her father Zeus. Many of the figures from the central scene are now fragmentary or entirely lost. This figure was carved as an isolated horse’s head. Its ears are flattened back, its jaw gapes, it has flared nostrils and bulging eyes. A portion of the lower jaw and the inner side of the top of the head were cut away. There are dowel holes where the metal bridle was attached. On the crest of the mane are eleven smaller holes, in which some metallic ornaments must have been inserted. This is the head of one of the horses that drew the chariot of the moon goddess...
