Nature and forest places are so healing meditative and peaceful. I love walking out to the woods in the summer. The sunlight is iridescent shining through the leaves creating beautiful shadows over the ground. I have always been entranced by the shadows and light in the forest. I create the effects of transient light by harnessing optical mixing and some of the colour theory employed by the impressionists resulting in a semi-abstract contemporary painting. An original artwork, one of a kind, this painting has been created with high quality acrylic paints on a deep edged canvas so no need for a frame. I use impasto techniques applied with a palette knife in multi layers, which creates a contemporary painting and if you look closely you can see the first layers applied in places.
Amanda Horvath is a contemporary artist whose works are available at Wychwood Art online and in our gallery. Amanda is influenced by the woods and moors of her home in the Peak District. Achieving a B A Hons (first class) in fine art Amanda went on to lecture in painting and printmaking. Now working full time as an artist from her studio her paintings are informed by the wild landscapes of her home. Renowned for forest scenes Amanda’s paintings are full of colour, texture and contrast, with an emphasis on delicate light effects and dramatic shadows. “I have a close connection to the natural world and painting is a response to the beautiful landscape, I attempt to capture the spirit of the land and the ethereal quality of light filtering through woodlands. Through my work I hope to impart the sense of peace and meditative calm I feel in these quiet places. This affinity with nature has grown from childhood and my past experiences” An important part of the creative process is to be absorbed in nature, so it begins with walking in the landscape making preliminary notes. These form the foundations of the work translated onto canvas in the studio. Harnessing some optical mixing techniques the paintings are created with layer upon layer of highly textured paint, worked expressively using palette knives and brushes, which results in paintings that lie somewhere between abstraction and realism. Lee paints in the tradition of the original impressionist painters. There is more than a mere passing nod to some of the greatest artists of the impressionist movement. Claude Monet's famous 1872 painting ‘Impression, Sunrise’ gave birth to the movement’s name. In his sketchy, ethereal painting, modern industry of the time can be seen to the left in the form of chimney stacks bellowing plumes of smoke into the morning air. To the right, iron cranes stand silent and ghostly against a pale violet grey sky. The Impressionist painters would never compromise their art by concealing modernity and industry of the time, and would rather incorporate it into the landscape for accuracy. Little did they know that when Monet painted his canvas he was capturing the embryonic stages of what we refer to as climate change today. ‘Sunrise Impression 2021’ is the first in a series of paintings that Lee has created where he explores the contemporary landscape including elements of modernity. Artist Statement
“Since my childhood days I always loved taking photos, but for unknown reasons instant film never really caught my attention. After I saw the works of a friend who happened to be a gifted Polaroid photographer, I was totally mesmerized and the desire to shoot with instant film constantly grew in me. But for as long as I can think music has always been my main preoccupation.
I somehow always feel the need to create, but my focus shifted more and more from making music to instant photography and it grew into something much more fulfilling and pure. Sometimes, these two passions even come together when I am able to provide my photos for album artworks – this makes me incredibly happy.
As I always have been very introverted and reclusive I often drift off into my own inner world. The dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres in my work are the visualization and the result of these imaginations.
Another influence on my photography is my essential need to travel the world. But I am not interested in documenting the places I see like they are but rather love to create otherworldly scenes by adding the dreamlike texture of instant film, serving me as a needful escape from reality.”
Artist Biography
Julia Beyer is an analogue photographer from Germany. She mainly works with instant film to express her inner visions that often show dreamlike landscapes and surreal atmospheres. After being more known for her musical endeavors as the singer of the dreampop band Chandeen, she began to delve into this photographic art form in 2014 and since then expands her portfolio continuously. Her work has been published in various international print and online publications.
Since 2017, she is a member of the renowned "12:12 Project", a worldwide collective of female Polaroid photographers.
