Questions About One For The Recession
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023Most vintage earrings are clip-ons largely due to how beliefs about piercings have changed over the years. It was only during the 1980s and ’90s that many women began piercing their ears. Prior to that, many women didn't have piercings and could only wear clip-ons, so makers produced earrings to suit their customer base. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of vintage earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024A one-person sofa is called an accent chair. Less commonly, people may refer to it as a single-seater sofa. Accent chairs come in a wide variety of styles, but they typically feature upholstered backrests and seats like a sofa. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary accent chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024A one-piece chair is typically called a monobloc chair. The term typically refers to chairs crafted out of a single piece of a synthetic material, such as resin or polyethylene. In most cases, monobloc chairs are lightweight and stackable. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023Yes, it's okay to have just one accent chair. There are no rules when decorating a living room, so you're free to place one accent chair along with a loveseat and/or sofa in your seating area. When choosing your living room furniture, consider how much space you have and how many people will typically be sitting in the room at one time. Use this information as a guide. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of accent chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019
Generally, a portrait depicts one subject, but group portraits exist.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 11, 2024A one-person couch is typically called an armchair.
The sofa is typically defined as a long upholstered piece of seating that features a back and arms and is intended for two or more people. While the term “couch” comes from the Old French couche, meaning to lie down, and sofa has Eastern origins, both are forms of divan, a Turkish word that means an elongated cushioned seat. No matter how you spell it, sofa just means comfort, at least it does today.
Armchairs are among the types of chairs you should know when decorating your home. Most living rooms include at least one armchair. Typically upholstered and including comfortable armrests, armchairs vary by size, style and color, allowing you to use them to make a statement, focus on comfort or show off your personality.
Find a collection of vintage armchairs on 1stDibs. - 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Yes, yellow diamonds are typically more expensive than white ones. While a 0.7 carat white diamond costs around $1,500, a 0.7 carat yellow diamond will usually cost $6,500.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024Whether you need one or two accent chairs depends on your personal preferences and the space. First, consider the layout of your room. In a small space, two accent chairs may make a seating area feel cramped, while having just one may result in a larger room feeling too empty. Also, think about how many people you're likely to entertain in your seating area and what other furniture is present in the space. If you frequently need additional seating to accommodate large groups, you may want to purchase a second accent chair. Find a wide range of accent chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024The number one watch brand in the U.S. varies over time. However, experts state that Apple Watch has the most widespread recognition in the U.S., followed by Rolex. Other watchmakers that enjoy a high degree of name notoriety in the country include Breitling, Bulova, Cartier, Chanel, Gucci, IWC, Longines, Seiko, TAG Heuer, Tiffany & Co., Timex and Vacheron Constantin. Find a large collection of watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 7, 2024Louis Vuitton does use one piece of leather for a variety of different handbag designs. The material wraps from front to back, with no seam on the bottom, leaving the iconic LV symbol upside-down on the backside. Find a collection of expertly vetted Louis Vuitton handbags from some of the world’s top reputable boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 19, 2025The name of one of the most famous paintings ever made is the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci produced the captivating portrait during the early 16th century. Some other widely known paintings include Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Edvard Munch's The Scream, Pablo Picasso's Guernica, Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas, Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, Grant Wood's American Gothic, Claude Monet's Water Lilies, Salvador Dalí's Persistence of Memory and Rembrandt's The Night Watch. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of fine art paintings.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024One of Whistler's famous paintings is commonly called Whistler's Mother. The actual title of the painting is Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, and the oil-on-canvas piece does depict James McNeill Whistler's mother. Whistler painted it in 1871. Today, it is part of the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France. On 1stDibs, find a variety of James McNeill Whistler art.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022British artist John Singer Sargent was one of the most important portrait painters of the 19th century. Other notable portraitists from the period include James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Géricault, Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassat, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. - 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Whether or not Neil Lane can make one of its silver rings gold or not depends on the piece. - 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024One of the most famous Realism paintings made by Jean-François Millet is called The Gleaners. It depicts three peasant women working in a field. Millet produced the oil painting in 1857, and it is now part of the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France. Other notable works by the French artist include The Angelus, Shepherdess with Her Flock and Man with a Hoe. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Jean-François Millet art.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023To tell a fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore apart from a real one, first closely examine the dial. The tapisserie pattern on the dial should feature raised squares in a regular pattern. On fakes, the dial is often just stamped with a grid to mimic the complex texture of an authentic Offshore. Also, look at the finish on the case. A real Oak Offshore will have an even finish all over with no variations in color or rough spots. Any flaws indicate that you're likely looking at a replica. When in doubt, a licensed appraiser or knowledgeable appraiser can assist you with authentication. Explore a collection of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 10, 2025Coco Chanel was considered one of the leading fashion designers in the 1920s and ’30s in Paris. The first Chanel shop was established in 1910 on rue Cambon by the young milliner Gabrielle Chanel, who had picked up the nickname “Coco” while working as a club singer. The boutique drew the attention of the Parisian fashion elite, who popularized her wide-brimmed Chanel Modes hats. Soon, she added a sportswear store in the Normandy resort town of Deauville, where Coco set the tone for her defining sense of style — traditionally masculine garments reimagined for feminine shapes, made from simple jersey fabric. Effortless and elegant, Chanel's designs promoted comfort and grace in women’s wear that had been dominated in the previous century by complicated layers of fabric and cumbersome corsets. She followed this success with a couture house, opened in 1915 in Biarritz. In 1926, Chanel introduced her first little black dress, reclaiming a color that had once been reserved for mourning and working-class women. That same decade, she debuted her perfume, Chanel No. 5, as well as the Chanel suit with a fitted skirt, inspired by the boxy lines of men’s clothing and employing a sporty tweed. During the 1920s, she also unveiled the predecessor for the 2.55 Flap bag, which remains one of Chanel's most popular offerings. Shop a large selection of Chanel apparel, bags and accessories on 1stDibs.
