Antique American Marine Seascape Oil Painting Crashing Surf Atlantic Coast Maine
By Frederick Judd Waugh
Located in Portland, OR
A fine antique seascape oil painting on panel by the celebrated marine artist, Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940), depicting the Atlantic of the coast of Maine, circa 1910.
The painting is finely executed with bold and decisive brush strokes with crisp edges, one can almost hear the roar of the ocean as the surf crashes upon the rocks. The painting is signed lower right "Waugh" and is housed in the original carved & gilded frame.
Condition is very good indeed, this fine seascape by one of America's most acclaimed late 19th early 20th century marine artists is ready to grace your wall. The painting will be accompanied with a certicificate of authenticity & provenance.
Frederick Judd Waugh was an American artist, primarily known as a marine artist. During World War I, he designed ship camouflage for the U.S. Navy, under the direction of Everett L. Warner.
Waugh was the son of a well-known Philadelphia portrait painter, Samuel Waugh. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Adolphe-William Bouguereau. After leaving Paris, he moved to England, residing on the island of Sark in the English Channel, where he made his living as a seascape painter. In 1898 he was recorded as living in Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire.
In 1908, Waugh returned to the U.S., settling in Montclair Heights, New Jersey. He had no studio until art collector William T. Evans (a railroad financier and President of the dry goods firm, Mills Gibbs Corporation) offered him one in exchange for one painting a year. In later years, he lived on Bailey Island, Maine, and in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Waugh’s marinescapes were highly acclaimed, garnering him the Popular Prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition for five years in a row, a feat accomplished by no other artist. In 1914, he was a judge of the art exhibit on Monhegan Island, Maine during the 1914 Ter-Centenary celebration of the Voyage of Captain John Smith.
In addition to his marinescapes, Waugh sometimes published work in periodicals, such as The Green Sheaf, to which he contributed at least one illustration. He also produced paintings and sketches on legendary and mythological themes; see, for instance, his 1921 sketch “Levitation in Dream No. 3”, and his c. 1912 painting “The Knight of the Holy Grail”.
In 1918, Waugh was recommended to serve as a camouflage artist (or camoufleur) for the U.S. Navy, as a member of the Design Section of its marine camouflage unit. That section was located in Washington, D.C., and was headed by American painter Everett L. Warner.
According to a biography of Waugh, “Many large ships, including the Leviathan, were painted according to his designs. Though the enterprise was of course a team effort in which no man played a solo part, he had every reason to be proud of his record. Only one ship with his system of camouflage was lost during the war”.
Waugh was known to produce literary work, publishing a short poem in Pamela Colman Smith’s short-lived periodical The Green Sheaf; a fairy tale in The English Illustrated Magazine; and, in 1916, the book The Clan of Munes...

Antique Western Oil on Canvas Painting Native American "The Captive" 1901
By Frank Paul Sauerwein
Located in Portland, OR
A large American Western, Native American oil on canvas landscape, by Frank Paul Sauerwein (1871-1910), "The Captive", 1901.
This large oil on canvas depicts a Native American brave captively tied to a tree stump and being viewed by a rival tribe, who are evidently deciding his fate. Behind the collected tribe of elders, braves and children are a pair of conical tipi dwellings, to the background are grazing horses and another group of native people in a tree lined setting. The painting is indistinctly signed lower left, condition is good, the painting is housed in the original frame with a giltwood rabbet, the painting at sight is 40" x 26".
Provenance; From a lifelong collection of 19th & early 20th Century Western Art, Portland, Oregon.
Frank Sauerwein was a respected painter of western landscapes, Indian portraits, Indian genre scenes, and California missions. His promising career was cut short by his death of tuberculosis at age thirty-nine.
The son of European-trained artist, Charles D. Sauerwein, Frank took his first art lessons from his father before studying at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and, finally, the Philadephia Museum School of Art. In 1891 he moved to Denver in hope of improving his health.
In 1893, Sauerwein accompanied the artist Charles Craig on a trip to the Ute reservation in southwestern Colorado. This began Sauerwein's unyielding fascination with the Southwest and its Native inhabitants. After a trip to Europe, he returned to the American West, visiting Taos in 1899 and Santa Fe in 1900. That same year, Sauerwein visited the Navajo reservation, becoming good friends with trading post entrepreneur, Lorenzo Hubbell. He also spent time at Keam's Canyon on the Hopi reservation where he sketched local inhabitants.
Sauerwein moved to Los Angeles in 1901, and then to Pasadena in 1902, but he maintained his contacts in the Southwest with Summer trips to the Grand Canyon, New Mexico Indian Pueblos, Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. He especially loved the Grand Canyon which is the subject of a large number of his paintings.
Rendered in a tight, academic style, Sauerwein's paintings clearly show the influence of German...

Antique American Realist Harvest Landscape Painting Bucks County Pennslyvania
By Frank F. English
Located in Portland, OR
Antique American watercolor painting, landscape harvest farm scene by Frank F. English (1854 - 1922), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Circa 1900.
A very attractive painting by the celebrated Pennsylvania artist Frank F. English, the location is in Point Pleasant, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The painting depicts a scene of blue skies with two farmers tossing hay with pitchforks & two horses harnessed to a hay wagon, with barns to the background. The painting signed lower right " Frank F. English", condition is excellent this very charming painting is ready to hang on your wall.
Biography
Frank F. English was born in Louisville Kentucky in 1854. In the early 1880s, he studied for five years in the evening classes of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His instructors included Thomas Eakins, James P. Kelly and Thomas Anshutz.
However, English's reputation primarily rests with his outstanding facility as a watercolorist; most of his known paintings are executed in this medium. English's propensity for its use coincides, appropriately enough, with the watercolor's growing popularity among other American painters.
The American Water Color Society brought the medium special prominence by the late 1860s, and acceptance on the level of oil painting in 1876. That same year, the society was invited to display its works at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Its members exhibited 116 watercolors, and their public exposure was enormous. It is safe to assume that during the 159-day Centennial, Frank English was among the nearly 10 million exposition attendees, surpassing attendance records at all preceding world's fairs.
At age twenty-two, English, traveled to Philadelphia to see works by the Society's notables such as Samuel Colman, R. Swain Gifford, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Albert Fitch...

Antique French School Oil Painting Canvas Cliffs at Etretat Normandy France 1910
Located in Portland, OR
A fine & large antique oil painting on canvas by Raimond Louis Lecourt (1882-1946), the cliffs at the Atlantic Ocean, Etretat, Normandy, France, circa 1910.
Lecourt was the quintessential painter of scenes of Normandy France, this is a large and very fine example of his work. The painting depicts the Falaise d' Amont located near Etretat, Normandy, the Falaises (cliffs) are on the Atlantic coast and are a very impressive formation of flint cliffs with huge naturally created archways. The painting is beautifully rendered and in some areas the artist has employed impasto technique (thickly applied paint) to provide texture to the ocean & cliffs, in the foreground of the cliffs is a flock of herring gulls circling overhead. The painting is signed "Lecourt" lower right with a dedication, the painting is housed in the original sponge decorated gesso frame, also created by the artist. Condition is excellent, this charming painting is ready to hang on your wall.
The artist was born in Le Havre, and studied at the National School of Fine Arts and the Regional School of Fine Arts of Rouen, he studied under Charles Lhuillier and Léon Bonnat. He received the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918
Military medal during WW1. Lecourt studied at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts under the direction of Charles Lhuillier , then with Léon Bonnat at the Paris School of Fine Arts . He then lived in Fontaine-la-Mallet , where he painted in the Normandy region, which was his favorite subject.
In 1899, Lecourt obtained the honorary prize for the upper course with the city's silver medal. A municipal scholarship which allowed him to enter the Paris School of Fine Arts in the studio of the painter Léon Bonnat . There he found his comrades from Le Havre who had preceded him there: Othon Friesz , Raoul Dufy , the brothers René and Henri de Saint-Delis .
He debuted at the Salon of French Artists in 1901 with his painting Le Herseur . He completed his studies in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson and it was around this time that he got into the habit of spending his holidays in Fontaine-la-Mallet with his comrade Othon Friesz . He settled there permanently in 1907, after a trip to Brittany from where he brought back numerous sketches and portraits.
During the First World War , he was mobilized on August 1, 1914 in the same regiment and behaved like a hero, decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal . During an engagement at Courcy - Brimont , September 14, he was injured by a gunshot to the right forearm. He continued to draw with his left hand then, after a long rehabilitation, he regained the use of his right hand. He became a member of the Society of French Artists, also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, and made regular submissions to the Salons. Many paintings by him appear in museums & galleries in Denmark , Germany, the United States, Japan, and in England where the "Dogs of the Duchess of Manchester" painting was exhibited and won Lecourt great acclaim.
After the outbreak of World War II, Lecourt takes the German Occupation of France very badly. After General Philippe Petains's handshake with Hitler in Montoire-sur-le-Loir, he returned his military medal to the Chancellery, accompanied by this comment: "We have no need for decorations in a country which no longer has the sense of honor"
During this period, he resided with Charles Toussaint, a Le Havre broker and companion from the 74th infantry regiment, at the Frescinet manor, a property which would disappear under the bombings of the September 11, 1944. At this time, he painted mainly on wood, as canvases were rare and expensive at this time.
In the winter of 1943-1944, he was hit by a military truck which skidded on the ice, during the fighting for the liberation of the port of Le Havre, the village of Fontaine-la-Mallet, where he lived, was raised to the ground under heavy bombing. His house, his studio, his notes and sketches were destroyed. However he went back to work with courage, but something had broken inside him. The following winter, he caught a cold and contracted pneumonia which took him away in eight days, unable to be properly treated following the refusal of an American army colonel, to give to civilians penicillin that only the Americans had at the time.
His friends mourned him and others said that he was a gifted painter of Cauchoise (Normandy) painting, and who knew so well how to render plough horses, Normandy cows...

Monumental Abstract Modernist Oil Panel Oregon Centennial Exposition Mural 1959
By Louis Bunce
Located in Portland, OR
Monumental modernist oil on panel painting by Louis Demott Bunce (1907-1983), from an installation for the Oregon Centennial Exposition, 1959.
A rare & important and monumental abstract painting by the celebrated Oregon artist Louis Bunce, the artist was commissioned to paint a mural for the 1959 Oregon Centennial & Trade Fair in Portland, the installation was titled " Gay Garden Way ", it was painted for the exterior of the Horticultural building. The mural having abstract plant abstractions, according to Bunce in his own words it was "the rounded shapes of flowers and the sun", the mural created a major furor from the conservative art public.
The painting signed and dated by the artist lower left, the work was sold in the late 1980s through the celebrated Laura Russo Gallery, this painting is featured in Roger Hull's book; "Louis Bunce, Dialogue with Modernism".
The painting is in good condition and ready to grace your wall.
Louis Bunce attended high school and the Museum Art School before leaving for the Art Students League in New York. He established a New York connection that began when he first attended classes there in 1927 and continued over the years with frequent visits. He became friends with many promising artists, including Jackson Pollock and David Smith. In 1939 he worked for the WPA Easel Project in New York and by the time he returned to Portland he was an established artist on the East Coast. He worked at the WPA art center in Salem as an Instructor and Assistant Director. His work included murals, two of which are in the Post Offices in Grants Pass and St. Johns. Their subjects, mining and orchard farming, are activities of each region. "I have always been visually drawn to the landscape, at first the desert and mountain regions of Wyoming; then the lush and gentle color of the Pacific Northwest and the urban landscape of New York." From 1942-1945 he worked as an illustrator, a tool designer, and in assembly for the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation. After WWII, Bunce joined the faculty of the Museum Art School in Portland, where he had been a student in 1925-1926. He taught there until his retirement in 1972. He excelled at producing screen-prints and introduced this technique to Oregon. While maintaining a national reputation throughout the 1950s and 1960s, some of New York's most prestigious galleries represented him. Theater buffs will remember his murals and portraits for Portland Civic Theater's 1938 production of Pride and Prejudice. In a career that made him one of the most recognized names in Oregon's art history, Bunce had many styles: cubism, expressionism, surrealism and abstractionism. His 1958 mural in the Portland International Airport presents this abstract style: "whirling propellers and shadows of the concourse as seen from above." It was controversial at the time as being too abstract for a public art project. Louis and wife Eda opened a full-time art gallery in Portland in 1949, called the Kharouba. Located first at 1016 SE Morrison, then at SW 11th and Alder, the gallery represented many of the leading artists of the day: Josephine Cameron, William Givler, Clifford Gleason, Jack Hammack, Charles Heaney, Frederick Heidel, George Johanson, Jack McLarty, Rick Norwood, C.S. Price, Arthur Runquist, Jolan Torok, Charles Voorhies...

Antique Swedish Oil Canvas Painting Romantic Interior Family Scene Monkey 1883
Located in Portland, OR
A fine & large antique oil on canvas painting by Bengt Nordenberg (1822-1902), Sweden, dated 1883.
Nordenberg is recognized as one of Sweden's most celebrated 19th century artists, his work epitomizes Swedish Romanticism and this painting is a wonderful representation of that style. The painting depicts an interior scene of a mother holding an infant in front of an open heath, with a fire burning in the grate, above the fire there are racks of meat hanging and above that are hams hanging. The infant has evidently just woken from a nap and his cradle sits next to his mother's chair, his brother sitting on the floor with his monkey & the carrying case he transports the animal to beg for money, the monkey humorously sits with his begging plate outstretched to the boy's mother, much to her consternation!
The painting is signed and dated lower left, it is in very good condition and is housed in the original gilded composition and limewood frame, Nordenberg's record for a painting at auction is over $91,500, this is a fine example of the artist's work and is ready to hang on your wall. Antique French Oil Painting Claude Rouget de LiIsle Singing "La Marseillaise"
By Isidore Alexandre Augustin Pils
Located in Portland, OR
A fine antique French oil painting on canvas by Isidore Alexandre Augustin Pils (1815–1875), the painting depicting Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) singing "La Marseillaise", circa 1849.
Isidore Pils was an academic painter, very often painting military subjects. Claude Rouget de Lisle was a French army officer from the French Revolutionary Wars and famously wrote the words to "La Marseillaise" and first performed it to the Mayor of Strasbourg; Baron Philippe-Frederic de Dietrich. This painting dates to the middle of the 19th century and could be by the hand of Pils or possibly a talented copyist who was also a classically trained artist, the work appears to be unsigned.
The painting is in excellent condition and is housed in a gilded frame.
Isidore Pils produced a number of paintings with this famous scene and one such painting is housed in the collection of The Louvre in Paris.
At sight without frame 26.50" x 22"
Pils was born in Paris as the son of a soldier François Pils. At the age of twelve, he studied with Guillaume Guillon-Lethière for four years.
In 1831 he became a student at the École des Beaux-Arts and studied under François-Édouard Picot. He competed for the Prix de Rome, which he won in 1838 for a history painting, St. Peter Healing a Lame Man at the Door of the Temple. Although in poor health, Pils then spent the customary three years at the French Academy in Rome at the Villa Medici, which then had Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres as its director. While in Italy he visited Naples, Venice, and Florence.
Pils's earlier paintings have religious themes. In 1849 he completed his most famous work, Rouget de L'Isle Singing La Marseillaise, which now resides at the Musée historique de Strasbourg. After experiences travelling with French troops through the Crimea, his themes took on military and nationalistic subjects. He later produced many military scenes during the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Pils was appointed professor of painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1863 but left the same year for two years in Algeria. In 1868 he was elected to seat #14 of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Among his students were Adrien Moreau, Paul Adolphe Rajon, Julien Dupré, Luc-Olivier Merson, Ludovic Piette...
