Sir William Forbes (1857-1947) was older brother of Stanhope Alexander Forbes R.A (1857-1947), an artist and member of the influential Newlyn school of painters.

It was in Brittany that he met and became good friends with Dublin born Stanhope Alexander Forbes. Todd moved to Cornwall in 1883 and the following year Stanhope Forbes joined him.
