Constructed in amboyna, with extensive marquetry inlays in specimen woods, and enhanced with parcel-gilt highlights. Rising from a cruciform platform base adorned with knops and having concealed castors, supporting the inlaid, and gently stepped and tapering centre column with stylized 'c' form brackets bracing the octagonal top, the outer guard band having English roses inlaid at the angles, with foliates with the national emblems of Scotland and Ireland, thistles and shamrocks. Stamped by the makers to the underside, 'Johnstone & Jeanes 67 Bond Street'.

Johnstone, Jeanes & Co
John Johnstone of Bond Street came to prominence after his collaboration with Robert Jupe, an 'upholder' of 47 Welbeck Street, Cavendish Square, London, who patented a remarkable design for a circular expanding dining table with a segmented top in 1835. After Jupe's death, the firm traded as 'Johnstone and Jeanes' from 1842 until 1880, having moved to 67 Bond Street and continuing the tradition of producing high quality furniture. After 1880, the company was re-named Johnstone & Norman. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition 1851, The International Exhibition of London in 1862, and The Paris Exhibition of 1878. Both the Royal Collection Trust and the Victoria & Albert Museum own stamped pieces of furniture in their collections.

Presenting an absolutely stunning and original 18C english chippendale shepherds crook armchair.
Made in England circa 1780-1800 of walnut, this ‘period’ chair is simply Gorgeous in it’s Originality!
It is still covered in it’s original needlepoint/tapestry upholstery with neo-classical elements of a Greek or Roman Goddess sitting holding a staff on the back splat and floral motiff’s elsewhere.
What makes this piece Truly Original is the fact that the needlepoint appears to have been signed by the original owner/maker of the tapestry and it appears to be the family name of “Tancret”.
The arm rests have the most glorious ‘shepherd’s crook’ twists and turns.
The central base section has what appears to be heavily carved Prince of Wales Plumes, signifying the Regency Era.
The knees of the 2 front legs have the most amazingly carved acanthus relief decoration and the 2 front legs end in the best example of ball and claw feet you are ever likely to see.
The back legs also have some interesting detail as the feet are platformed or hooved.
Overall, the piece is in great condition for it’s age and use. There are no major tears or holes in the original tapestry. There is some discoloration but that is to be expected with a piece this old.
There is a very small piece of the central front medallion (bottom left as you look) missing, but it is not noticeable and does not detract from the piece.
One small stain on the back.
Gorgeous natural patina to the wood.

The vast movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 brought the Tancret family name to the British Isles. Tancret comes from the ancient Norman given name Tancred. The Tanksley variant is indeed rare. However, this name traces its origin to Roger Tankerlayman who was listed in Yorkshire in 1387.
Because of this political and religious unrest within English society, many people decided to immigrate to the colonies. Families left for Ireland, North America, and Australia in enormous numbers, traveling at high cost in extremely inhospitable conditions. The New World in particular was a desirable destination, but the long voyage caused many to arrive sick and starving. Those who made it, though, were welcomed by opportunities far greater than they had known at home in England. The frieze having curved panels of verde antico, overlaid with foliate scrolls of statuary marble. The centre plaque which is dog leg in shape depicts Flora, goddess of flowers and the season of spring, flanked by swags of oak leaves and acorns. The full tapering columns of verde antico marble are fluted and capped with finely carved ionic capitals.
This fireplace is considered to be one of the finest and most important 18th century fireplaces to come to the market in recent years. Ryan and Smith have acquired it from the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia. Walter P Chrysler Jr., renowned collector of antiques and fine art, purchased the fireplace from the well-known Mayfair antiques dealer Stanley J Pratt Limited, 27 Mount Street, London. Stanley J Pratt removed the chimneypiece from the drawing room of Linton Park Kent after the Owner (Olaf Hambro’s) death in 1961, its featured in a Country life article from April 5th 1946 (see additional images). With the economic decline of the Italian aristocracy, the smaller proportions of Rococo furniture lent themselves to update the furnishings of the palace. Furniture was produced, mainly in the Veneto, with a typically Baroque formal layout, but with more minute proportions and more elegant decorative modules typical of Rococo furniture that did not contrast with the old Baroque scenographic furniture. This style, which spread throughout the peninsula, was called Italian Baroque. Venice, already renowned for its painted and lacquered furniture, was the center of the development of this style, where it lasted well beyond the mid-eighteenth century.

Mined since the Neolithic Age, cinnabar is the ore of mercury, and as such, it can be incredibly toxic, especially when mining. In fact, during the Roman Empire, miners at Spain’s Almadén mine in Spain were frequently exposed to mercury fumes, and the subsequent, often fatal, sickness was considered an occupational hazard.
The most popular known use of cinnabar is in Chinese carved lacquer-ware, a technique that is believed to have originated in the Song Dynasty, in which cinnabar is ground to a powder and added to clear lacquer.
