This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, from May 23 to October 6, 2013. The exhibition then traveled to Dallas and finally to the Walker Art Center in 2014. The book was owned by Herbert Kasper and inscribed by the author to him. Herbert Kasper was an American fashion designer known as Kasper. He studied English and advertising at New York University and fashion at the Parsons School of Design in New York from 1951–53 and l'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1953. He left NYU to serve in the US Army in Europe. After World War II he enrolled at Parsons, where he became a protégé of milliner Fred Frederics. After graduating, he returned to Paris for two years developing his skills in design while working for Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, and Marcel Rochas. When he returned to the US, he worked for Frederics at Mr. John. He was an avid art collector, and in 2011, the Morgan Library and Museum devoted an exhibition, called “Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs,” to the designer. Hopper Drawing is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (1882–1967). More than anything else, Hopper's drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artist's work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifs--the street, the movie theatre, the office, the bedroom, the road—that he would return to throughout his career as an artist. 2006, Australian, Betsy Lewis Napangardi (1940-2008), Framed Mina Mina Dreaming, etching on paper. Number 5 of 60 and pencil signed Betsy Lewis with embossed seal. Biography: Betsy Lewis Napangardi was a traditional Warlpiri woman from the Yuendumu Community region. Betsy was born in the bush just west of Yuendumu in the 1940’s, this was before hospitals and health clinics were available and accessible in the area. Betsy moved to Mount Doreen Station with her family at a young age. She was raised by Paddy Japanangka Lewis and attended the Yuendumu School. She spent her life living in Yuendumu. Betsy began painting full time in 1999 however she had been painting for Warlukurlangu Artists for some time before then. She was considered at the forefront of the move towards more abstract depictions of Aboriginal art however did maintain a strong connection to her Kurruwarri heritage. Her art is bright and textured with thick layers of paint. Some of her family members are also artists such as Margaret Lewis. Betsy is known best for five Dreamtime depictions - Snake Vine, Women’s Dreaming, Edible Fungus, Dreaming Site and Dogwood. The story of Jintiparnta is of the Napangardi and Napanangka women who collect Jintiparnta or Edible Fungus at Karnakarlangu. The area is also known as Mina Mina. The ancestral women would travel from here heading north and east toward Janyinki and Alcoota country. Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees. This charcoal drawing entitled “Memory of Leaves” beautifully illustrates the branching form of a mature birch tree. Loosely drawn with informal, sketch-like linework, the tree is shown in the middle of winter, bare of leaves and white with frost. Surdo’s skillful placement of shadow illustrates the forking branches with incredible texture and effortless realism. The intricate play of light and dark is accentuated by the stark white background, a negative space that isolates the tree in space and time. Contemporary artist Jennifer Printz "Quietus II" series of six prints blends photography, graphite, and Epson Ultrachrome inks on antique papers. Wilson Museum at Hollins University, where her solo exhibition sabbatical work was titled "An Almost Unnoticed Quietus." This title cleverly connects "quietus" with "almost unnoticed," highlighting the themes of meditation and mindfulness. Through these practices, Jennifer uncovers profound aspects of our world and emotions often overlooked in our hurried lives. Meditation has taught her to appreciate the moments when we are on the verge of giving up, as these are often when unexpected greatness can unfold.
