A. Durenne Furniture

Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm. By the 60s, numerous examples of bas-reliefs, fountains, statues and vases were being produced, and the firm began exhibiting various exhibitions, including the 1862 and 1867 International Exhibitions in Paris. Durenne was a founding member of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In 1888, the foundry acquired the address of S.A.d.F. du Val d'Osne, 26 Rue du Faubourg Poissonnière, Paris.

Sommevoire France, 1880-1885, cast-iron This cast-iron statue was made by Antoine Durenne in the late 19th century. Durenne got his education at l’Ecole des Arts et Metiers in Angers and at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He graduated in 1842 and in 1847 he bought a small foundry in the picturesque village of Sommevoire. He is best known for his animal sculptures. Nowadays his work can still be admired in public spaces, like parks. This statue shows Cupid seated on a panther. Cupid, son of Venus and god of love, can be recognized by his arrows and wings. The same statue was placed in Blossac Park (French: Parc de Blossac), a historic private garden and now a public park, in Poitiers, France.
